A process called an action potential happens that occurs when the membrane potential for a specific cell initially increases before decreasing. It is a characteristic property of several animal cells namely, muscle cells, neural cells, and endocrine cells. Certain plant cells also produce them. Neurons play a vital role in cell-to-cell communication. In the beta pancreas cells actions potential is associated with hormone release. Plasma membranes have a specific type in voltage-gated, ion-channels that are used for creating action potential. The channels remain closed when the membrane potential is near it's resting value of the cell , but when the membrane's potential increases then the channels are activated. When the channels are inactive, they let inward flow sodium ions. This in turn increases their membrane voltage. The rapid inward flow sodium ions results in changing the membrane's polarity and in turn, they turn off. Following this, potassium channels become active and there is an outward flow of the potassium ions . As a result, the membrane returns to its neutral state. A transient negative shift referred to as refractory is a way to stop back motion of the potential. In the animal cell, generally two kinds of these are well-known, such as one that is generated because of voltage-gated sodium channels, the other can be produced by voltage-gated calcium channels.

Most cells have an electric field between their outside and indoor environment. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70mV. In the majority of cells minor voltage fluctuations are observed to occur , however in certain cells this is a typical characteristic. Some cells also display periodic up and down oscillations as the voltage rises and falls. The time between these potentials fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells the down and up cycle of the action potential is completed in less than thousandth of a second while in other cells, the sequences can take as long as a couple of seconds. The electrical properties of an animal cell is dependent on its membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of two layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized and maintain a voltage variation known as membrane potential. In case of neurons, dendrites, axons and the body of the cell have distinct electrical properties. The most stimulated part of neuron is the Axon hillock, however, axons as well as cells body too can be stimulated. The axon hillock's remaining potential is -70mV and the threshold potential is -55 mV. Synaptic inputs into the neuron result in depolarization which causes membrane potential to increase or decrease. Action potentials are produced when enough depolarization happens and the membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

Action potential is the result from the voltage-gated channels present in the plasma membrane of cells. A voltage-gated ion channel is actually a cluster composed of proteins that remain inside the plasma membrane. These proteins produce action potential as it may be the cause of a positive feedback loop. Membrane voltage is responsible for managing the state of Ion channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback cycle occurs at full strength. Its duration and amplitude are determined by the biophysical properties of the voltage-gated Ion Channels. Ion channels of various types exist that can generate positive feedback loops and eventually produce these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels play a role in the creation of more powerful potentials similar to nerve impulses. The slower ones, like those generated in the muscles cells are controlled by the calcium ion channels.The ones that have been the most extensively studied voltage -gated Ion channels are sodium ion channel that participate in quicker nerve impulse conduction.
