Action potential is a phenomenon in which the potential of the membrane of a particular cell increases before decreasing. It is a characteristic property that is present in a wide variety of animal cells , namely muscles, neurons, and the endocrine cell. Some plant cells also produce these. Neurons play an extremely important role in cell-tocell communication. In the beta pancreas cells action potential is linked to that release of insulin. Plasma membranes are made up of a special kind in voltage-gated, ion-channels that are used for producing action potential. They remain closed even when their membrane potential is near an equilibrium potential for cells, however when the membrane's potential increases the channels then they open. When they are opened, they permit an inward flow of sodium ions, which boosts cell membrane power. The swift inward flow of sodium ions results in changing the membrane's polarity and , consequently, they are inactive. The potassium channels then become activated , and inward flows of the potassium ions . The result is that the membrane returns to its neutral state. A temporary negative shift, known as refractory period blocks back travel of the action potential. In animal cells typically two kinds of these potentials are understood, one which is produced due to the voltage-gated sodium channels, and another that can be produced by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

A majority of cells experience a voltage difference between their exterior and interior environments. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is -70 mV. In majority of cells very small voltage fluctuations are reported to happen, but in a few cells this is a typical feature. Some cells also display up and down cycles as the voltage decreases and increases. The time between these potentials vary throughout a vast range. In brain cells the down and up motion potential cycle are completed in less than thousandth of a second while in different types of cells, the cycles may take several seconds. The electrical ability of a cell in the animal kingdom is influenced by the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of an outer layer of lipids as well as proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized and maintain an electrical voltage that is called membrane potential. For the neurons, dendrites and cell body have different electrical characteristics. One of the most exciting parts of neuron is the Axon hillock however axons and the cell body also get excited. In the axon hillock, the threshold potential for resting is -70mV and the threshold voltage is at -55 mV. Synaptic connections to the nerve cause depolarization, causing the membrane potential to increase or fall. Action potential is produced when enough depolarization is accumulated and the membrane current reaches the threshold.

Action potential is the result in the function of voltage-gated channels present in the plasma membrane of cells. A voltage-gated ion canal is actually a cluster of proteins which remain in the plasma membrane. It produces action potential as it may create an positive feedback loop. Membrane voltage is responsible for maintaining the state of the these channels. The action potential is created whenever the positive feedback is carried out at full force. The time and amplitude of the action are determined by the biophysical properties of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. A variety of Ion Channels are known that produce positive feedback cycles that eventually cause the creation of these potentials. The sodium channels with voltage are involved with the creation of higher potentials similar to nerve impulse. These are the ones that are slower, similar to those found in the muscles cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels. The most extensively studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion networks that play an important role in more rapid nerve impulse conduction.
