The action potential is a process in which the potential of the membrane for a specific cell initially increases and then decreases. It is a signature characteristic of a variety of cell types in animals, such as muscle cells, neuron cells, and endocrin cells. Plant cells also produce them. Neurons play a vital function in cell-to-cell communication. The beta cells of the pancreas action potentials are connected to the release of insulin. Plasma membranes contain a distinct type of voltage-gated channels for producing action potential. These channels are shut even when their membrane potential is near the potential at rest of the cell . However if the membrane potential increases the channels then they open. As the channels become open, they let inward flow sodium ions which increases that membrane's capacity. The rapid flow of sodium ions can alter the polarity of the membrane and , in the process, stop functioning. The potassium channels, after which, become activated , and that is followed by an outward flow of potassium ions . This causes the membrane returns to its neutral state. A transient negative shift referred to as refractory period blocks back moving of the action-potential. In animal cells generally two types of potentials are in existence, one by voltage-gated sodium channels and the second that occurs due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

The majority of cells have in a voltage differential between their internal and external environments. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is -70 mV. In the majority of cells little voltage fluctuations are known to occur but in some cells this can be a normal feature. Cells can show variations in the voltage, as the voltage decreases and increases. The duration of these potentials fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells the down and up sequence of action potentials are completed in less that a thousandth of a second. In other cells, actions can last for a long time. The electrical property of an animal cell is dependent on its membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of layers of lipids, and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized as they maintain an electrical voltage that is known as membrane potential. In case of the neurons, dendrites and the cell body possess different electrical properties. One of the most exciting parts of a neuron is the axon hillock, however the axon as well as the cell body can also be stimulated. In the axon hillock, the resting potential is 70 mV and the threshold potential is -55 mV. Synaptic connections to the nerve result in depolarization causing the membrane potential to increase or decrease. Action potential is created when sufficient depolarization takes place and the membrane potential crosses an upper limit.

The action potential results by the action of voltage-gated channels which are located within the plasma membrane of a cell. The voltage-gated ion channel in fact a collection of proteins which remain in the plasma membrane. This produces the action potential, which can be the cause of positive feedback loop. Membrane current is responsible controlling the level of Ion channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback circuit gets full power. The time and the intensity are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated ionchannels. Different types of ion channels exist that can generate positive feedback cycles and ultimately create these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels are involved in the creation of fast impulses like nerve impulses. In contrast, the slower ones produced in the muscles cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels. The most extensively studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium-ion channels that contribute to the speedier nerve impulse conduction.
