The majority of cells have some degree of voltage variation between their environment and their inside. The cell's voltage is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is -70mV. Most cells have tiny voltage fluctuations are observed to take place, but in certain cells this may be a common feature. The synaptic inputs to the neurons induce depolarization and cause the membrane potential to rise or decrease. A potential for action is created when enough depolarization is accumulated and the membrane potential crosses an upper limit.

The action potential results of the activity of voltage-gated ion channels located in the plasma membrane of cells. The voltage-gated ion channel actually a cluster composed of proteins that remain in the plasma membrane. This produces an action potential since it could cause an positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is responsible for controlling the condition of Ion channels. The action potential is created when the feedback cycle takes place at full intensity. The time and the intensity are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the voltage-gated ionchannels. Ion channels of various types have been identified which generate positive feedback cycles and ultimately result in the production of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels play a role in the creation of fast potentials that mimic those of nerve impulse. They are slower than those that occur in the muscle cells are mediated by the calcium ion channels.The ones that have been the most extensively studied voltage -gated channel are sodium ion channels participating in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
