Action potential is a phenomenon during which the membrane power of a cell initially increases but then decreases. This is a characteristic trait of a number of animals, including neurons, muscle cells and endocrin cells. Some plant cells also produce these. Neurons play the most important role in cell-to-cell communication. in pancreas beta cell action potential is linked to hormone release. Plasma membrane has special type of voltage-gated ion channels for creating action potential. The channels are closed while the membrane's current potential close to the potential at rest of the cell . However, when the membrane's voltage increases it opens the channels. When the channels are inactive, they allow an inward flow sodium ions which increases the cell's membrane potency. The swift inward flow of sodium ions result in changing the polarity of the membrane and they turn off. The potassium channels after that are activated , and there is an outward flow of potassium ions , causing the membrane returns to its normal state. The transient negative change known as refractory interval prevents further moving of the action-potential. In animal cells generally two varieties of these possibles are identified, for instance, one is generated by voltage-gated sodium channels, and the second one that occurs due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

The majority of cells have the same voltage between their outside and indoor environment. The cell's voltage is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is around -70 mV. Most cells have minor voltage fluctuations are observed to be present, however in some cells this may be a common characteristic. Some cells exhibit up and down cycles as the voltage goes up and down. The duration of these potentials are variable across a variety of. In brain cells the down and up motion potential cycle are completed in less than thousandth of a second, whereas in other cell types, the sequences can take as long as a couple of seconds. The electrical ability of an animal cell is dependent on the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of an outer layer of lipids as well as proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized , as they sustain an electric charge that is called membrane potential. In case of neurons, axons, dendrites and the cell body all have different electrical properties. The most stimulated part of an individual neuron is the hillock, however, axons as well as cells body also become excited. The axon hillock's maximum resting power is -70 mV and the threshold potential is at -55 millivolts. The synaptic inputs to the neurons trigger depolarization which causes the membrane potential to increase or decrease. An action potential is created once enough depolarization happens and the membrane potential exceeds a threshold value.

Action potential is the result from the voltage-gated channels which are located within the plasma membrane of a cell. The voltage-gated channel is in fact a collection of proteins , which are encased in the plasma and produce actions potential due to the fact that it could trigger the positive feedback loop. Membrane current is responsible controlling the condition of Ion channels. The action potential is created by the positive feedback cycle that runs at full speed. The time and the intensity are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated ion channels. There are a variety of ion channel types that are identified that generate positive feedback cycles and ultimately lead to the generation of these potentials. The sodium channels with voltage are involved in the creation of more powerful possibles that resemble those produced by nerve impulses. Slower ones , like those made in muscle cells are controlled by calcium ion channels. The most thoroughly studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channels which are involved in the speedier nerve impulse conduction.
