Action potential refers to an event where the membrane potential that a cell has first increases before decreasing. It is a common characteristic of a variety of animals, including muscle cells, neurons, and the endocrine cells. Some plant cells also make these. Neurons play an essential role in cell-tocell communications. In beta cells of pancreas action potential is connected with releases of insulin. Plasma membrane has special type of voltage-gated ion channels for producing action potential. The channels are closed at times when membrane potential is within its resting capacity of the cell . However, in the event that the membrane potential grows it becomes active. If the channels are open, they allow for an inward flow sodium ions that boost its membrane potential. The rapid flow of sodium ions can alter the polarity of the membrane and , as a consequence, they disappear. Following that, potassium channels are activated and they are able to flow outward potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane is returned in its normal state. A transient negative shift known as refractory periods prevents back travelling of the action potential. In animal cells typically two kinds of these potentials can be understood, one which is triggered through voltage-gated sodium channels, and another that occurs due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells maintain a voltage difference between their external and internal environments. The cell's voltage is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is about -70 mV. For the vast majority of cells, small voltage fluctuations are reported to be present, however in some cells this is a typical feature. Some cells also show an up-and-down cycle as the voltage increases and declines. The duration of these potentials vary over a wide range. In brain cells the down and up cycle of the action potential is completed in less than a thousandth of a second, whereas in other cell types, the cycles may take several seconds. The electrical properties of a cell in the animal kingdom is influenced by the membrane structure. Cell membrane is made up of an outer layer of lipids as well as proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized since they have a voltage difference called membrane potential. For neurons, dendrites, axons and cell bodies have different electrical characteristics. The most active part of an individual neuron is the hillock. However, the axon and body too can be stimulated. At the axon hillock the remaining potential is -70mV and the threshold is -55 MV. Synaptic inputs into the neuron lead to depolarization. This causes the membrane potential to rise or decrease. An action potential is created once enough depolarization develops until the membrane potential reaches an upper limit.

Action potential is the outcome by the action of voltage-gated channels that reside in the plasma membrane of cells. The voltage-gated channel is actually a cluster composed of proteins that remain in the plasma and produce movement potential because it is able to generate a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is accountable for managing the state of ion channels. Action potential is generated whenever the positive feedback goes on at full-speed. The duration and intensity are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. A variety of Ion Channels exist that can generate positive feedback loops and eventually lead to the generation of these potentials. The sodium channels that are voltage-gated participate in the production of high-speed potentials similar to nerve impulse. Lesser ones, such as those created by muscle cells are controlled by the calcium ion channels. The the most intensely studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channels which are involved in the speedier nerve impulse conduction.
