Action potential is a phenomenon where the potential for the membrane of a cell first increases and then decreases. It is a characteristic feature of a variety of animals, including neurons, muscle cells and cell types that are endocrine. Some plant cells also produce them. Neurons play a vital function in cell-to-cell communication. in pancreas beta cell action potential is connected with it being released by insulin. Plasma membranes are made up of a special kind in voltage-gated, ion-channels that are used for creating action potential. The channels are closed while the membrane's current potential within what is the limit of the cell , but should the membrane potential increase and the channels begin to open, they become active. When the channels become active, they allow an inward flow of sodium ions that boost the potential of membranes. The rapid inward flow sodium ions changes the polarity of the membrane and they disappear. The potassium channels then become active and you can see an outward movement of potassium ions . The result is that the membrane returns to its resting condition. A transient , negative shift known as the refractory phase prevents the return running of the action kinetic. In animal cells , two types of these potentials exist, acknowledged, one is generated due to the voltage-gated sodium channels and the other which results from calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells keep the voltage of their internal and external environments. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is -70 mV. In the majority cells, minor voltage fluctuations are observed as occurring, however in certain cells this is an expected characteristic. Some cells exhibit fluctuations in voltage as the voltage decreases and increases. The time between these potentials vary over a wide range. In brain cells the up and down process of action possible are complete in less than the thousandth of a second while in other cell types, the processes can last several seconds. The electrical power of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent upon the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of a layer of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

All animal cells are electro-polarized. They keep an electrical voltage that is known as membrane potential. In case of neuronal cells, axons and cell bodies have different electrical properties. The most exuberant part of neurons is the axon hillock but axon and cell body too are excited. The axon hillock's resting current is around 70 mV and the threshold voltage is -55 millivolts. Synaptic inputs to the neuron trigger depolarization which causes the membrane potential to rise or decrease. It is produced when sufficient depolarization takes place and that membrane potential reaches the threshold.

Action potential is the result of the work of voltage-gated Ion channels found within the plasma membranes of cells. Ion channels that are voltage-gated are actually a group of proteins that remain embedded in the plasma and produce movement potential because it is able to result in the positive feedback loop. Membrane voltage is responsible for controlling the level of Ion channels. The action potential is created as the feedback loop occurs at full strength. The time and amplitude of the action are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion channel voltage-gated. A variety of Ion Channels are known that produce positive feedback processes that create these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in the creation of fast potentials like those of nerve impulses. Slower ones like those produced in muscles are controlled by the calcium ion channels. The most intensively studied voltage-gated channel are sodium-ion channels that contribute to higher speed nerve impulse transmission.
