The frequency and duration are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. Numerous types of ion-channels have been identified which generate positive feedback cycles and ultimately lead to the generation of these potentials. The sodium channels that are voltage-gated participate in the generation of higher-frequency potentials that are similar to nerve impulses. Lesser ones, such as those created by muscles cells are controlled by calcium ion channels.The most intensively studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium channels, which play a role in faster nerve impulse communication.
