The transient negative change known as refractory period blocks back moving of the action-potential. In animal cells , typically two types of these potentials exist, in existence, one that is caused from voltage-gated potassium channels, and the second one that can be produced by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

The majority of cells have the voltage of their environment and their inside. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is about -70 mV. In the majority of cells low voltage variations are thought to happen, but in a few cells this is a regular feature. Slower ones , like those made by muscles are controlled by calcium ion channels.The ones that have been the most extensively studied voltage -gated Ion channels are the sodium ion channels participating in quicker nerve impulse conduction.
