A process called an action potential happens where the membrane potential of a cell first increases then decreases. It is the characteristic property to a variety of cell types in animals, such as muscles cells, nerve cells, and the endocrine cell. Some plant cells also make them. Neurons play a very crucial function in cell-to-cell communication. The beta cells of the pancreas the action potential is associated with hormone release. Plasma membranes comprise a particular kind of voltage-gated ion channels for creating action potential. They remain closed whenever the membrane's potential remains within those of the cell . However, when the membrane's potential increases the channels then they open. When the channels open they allow an inward flow sodium ions, which boosts its membrane potential. The fast inward flow of sodium ions leads to a change in the membrane's polarity and , consequently, they stop functioning. Following that, potassium channels are active and inward flows potassium ions . As a result, the membrane is returned to its normal state. A transient positive shift known as refractory is a way to stop back moving of the action-potential. In animal cells , typically two kinds of these potentials are described, for instance, one of which is through voltage-gated sodium channels and another one that is generated by voltage-gated calcium channels.

In most cells, there is an electric field between their exterior and interior environments. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70mV. In the majority cells, small voltage fluctuations are reported to occur however in some cells, this is a common characteristic. Certain cells may also exhibit the cycle of up and down as they increase and decrease in voltage. The duration of these potentials can vary widely. In brain cells the down and up process of action possible are performed in less than a thousandth of a second. In other cells, these actions can last for a long time. The electrical function of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent upon the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of an outer layer of lipids as well as proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized because they keep the difference in voltage known as membrane potential. For neurons, axons, dendrites and the cell body all have different electrical properties. The area that is most excitable in one's neuron's axon hillock, however, axons as well as cells body are also excited. In the axon hillock, the resting voltage is -70 mV and the threshold potential is 55 mgV. Neuronal synaptic interactions result in depolarization causing the membrane potential to increase or decrease. A potential for action is created when enough depolarization happens and the membrane potential is at an upper limit.

The action potential results of the activity of voltage-gated ion channels within the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated Ion Channel is actually a cluster consisting of proteins that stay in the plasma membrane. This produces actions potential due to the fact that it could trigger a positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for setting the parameters of Ion channels. Action potential is generated during the time that the feedback cycle takes place at full intensity. The duration and the amplitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated Ion Channels. Ion channels of various types are known to produce positive feedback and result in the production of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels play a role in the creation of more powerful potentials like those of nerve impulse. Slower ones , like those made in the muscles are controlled by the calcium Ion channels. The the most intensely studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels participating in more rapid nerve impulse conduction.
