Action potential is a phenomenon that occurs when the membrane potential of a cell increases but then decreases. It is a signature characteristic that is present in a wide variety of human cells, which include muscles, neurons and the endocrine cells. Certain plant cells also produce these. Neurons play an essential part in cell-to cell communication. In pancreas beta cells, action potential is connected with the release of insulin. Plasma membranes comprise a particular kind of voltage-gated Ion channels creating action potential. They remain closed even when their membrane potential is close to its resting capacity of the cell , but when the membrane potential rises the channels then they open. As the channels become open, they let inward flow sodium ions. This in turn increases that membrane's capacity. The swift inward flow of sodium ions leads to a change in the polarity of the membrane and as a result they become inactive. The potassium channels after that are active and that is followed by an outward flow of potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane is returned to its resting state. A transient positive shift known as refractory duration prevents the reverse travelling of the action potential. In animal cells , usually two kinds of these are identified, for instance, one which is triggered because of voltage-gated sodium channels, while the other is produced due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Most cells have an electrical voltage gap between their outside and indoor environment. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is about -70 mV. In the majority cells, tiny voltage fluctuations are observed to occur but in some cells this is a typical feature. Certain cells may also exhibit upward and downward cycles as the voltage rises and falls. The duration of these voltages fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells the up and down sequence of action potentials are complete in less than the thousandth of a second, whereas in other cells, processes can last several seconds. The electrical capacity of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent on its membrane structure. Cell membrane is made up of one layer of lipids along with proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

All animal cells are electro-polarized. They keep an electrical voltage that is known as membrane potential. For neuronal cells, axons and cell bodies have different electrical characteristics. The most active part of neuron is the axon hillock. However, the axon and body too can be stimulated. The axon hillock's resting potential is -70 mV and the threshold voltage is 55 MV. The synaptic inputs to the neurons cause depolarization, causing the membrane potential to rise or decrease. Action potential is created when enough depolarization is accumulated and the membrane's potential exceeds an upper limit.

Action potential is the result from the voltage-gated channels found within the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated Ion Channel is in fact a collection consisting of proteins that stay in the plasma membrane. It generates movement potential because it is able to result in an positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is the main factor responsible for controlling the state of Ion channels. Action potential is generated whenever the positive feedback continues at its fullest. The duration and the amplitude are determined by the biophysical properties of the voltage-gated ion channels. Several types of ion channels have been identified which generate positive feedback processes that cause the creation of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium-channels are involved in the creation of more powerful potentials that mimic those of nerve impulse. In contrast, the slower ones produced in muscles are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The most intensively studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channels participating in higher speed nerve impulse transmission.
