It is an event in which the potential of the membrane of a cell first increases but then decreases. It is the characteristic property of several human cells, which include muscles cells, neurons and endocrin cells. Plant cells also produce them. Neurons play an important role in cell-tocell communications. in pancreas beta cell the action potential is associated with releases of insulin. Plasma membrane has special type of voltage-gated Ion channels producing action potential. The channels are closed in the event that membrane potentials are close to it's resting value of the cell but should the membrane potential increase and the channels begin to open, they become active. Once the channels are open, they allow the flow of sodium ions which increases the membrane potential. The rapid inward flow of sodium ions leads to a change in the polarity of the membrane and as a result they stop functioning. The potassium channels then become activated , and they are able to flow outward potassium ions . As a result, the membrane returns in its normal state. A transient negative shift referred to as refractory is a way to stop back travelling of the action potential. In animal cells , typically two types of potentials are described, for instance, one from voltage-gated potassium channels, and another that is caused by voltage-gated calcium channels.

The majority of cells exhibit an electrical voltage gap between their exterior and interior environments. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is around -70 mV. The majority of cells show few voltage fluctuations are believed to occur however in some cells, this is a standard characteristic. Certain cells may also exhibit up and down cycles as the voltage goes up and down. The time between these potentials differ across a broad range. In brain cells, the up and down motion potential cycle are completed in a fraction of a millisecond of a second while in other types of cells , intervals may be prolonged to several seconds. The electrical properties of an animal cell is influenced by the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of an outer layer of lipids as well as proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized since they have an electric charge that is called membrane potential. For neurons, dendrites, axons and the cell body possess different electrical characteristics. The most excitable component of an individual neuron is the hillock. However, the axon, dendrites, and cell body can also be stimulated. The axon hillock's resting voltage is -70 mV and the threshold is at -55 mgV. Synaptic connections to the nerve trigger depolarization which causes the membrane potential to rise or fall. A potential for action is created when enough depolarization accumulates and that membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

Action potential is the result of the activity of voltage-gated ion channels present in the plasma membranes of cells. Ion channels that are voltage-gated are actually a cluster of proteins that are embedded in the plasma membrane. It generates action potential because it can create an positive feedback loop. Membrane potential plays a role in controlling the level of ion channels. Action potential is generated in the event that the positive feedback process is carried out at full force. The time and the intensity are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated ionchannels. Many kinds of ionchannels are known that produce positive feedback cycles and ultimately lead to the generation of these potentials. The sodium channels with voltage are involved in the generation of higher-frequency potentials that are similar to nerve impulse. In contrast, the slower ones produced in the muscles cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels. The ones that have been the most extensively studied voltage -gated channel are sodium ion channels which are involved in the speedier nerve impulse conduction.
