An action potential occurs where the potential for the membrane in a cell is first increased but then decreases. It is a characteristic property and characteristic of a lot of animal cells , including muscles, neurons and the endocrine cell. Certain plant cells also produce these. Neurons play the most important part in cell-to cell communication. In pancreas beta cells, action potentials are connected to the release of insulin. Plasma membranes have a specific type of ion channels that are voltage-gated for creating action potential. The channels remain closed while the membrane's current potential near an equilibrium potential for the cell . However, should the membrane potential increase then the channels open. The channels that are active permit an inward flow sodium ions. This in turn increases that membrane's capacity. The fast inward flow of sodium ions alters the polarity of the membrane which causes them to stop functioning. The potassium channels after that are active and the flow outward of the potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane is returned to its normal state. A transient negative shift known as refractory is a way to stop back traveling of the action voltage. In animal cells generally , two types of these potentials exist, described, for instance, one which is produced by the voltage-gated calcium channels, and another that is produced due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

The majority of cells have some degree of voltage variation between their surroundings and their interior. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is around -70 mV. The majority of cells show no voltage fluctuations are known to occur , however in certain cells, this is a common feature. Some cells show variations in the voltage, as the voltage increases and declines. The duration of these voltages can be varied over a broad spectrum. In brain cells the down and up process of action possible are executed in less then a thousandth of a second. In other types of cells , cycle may last for several seconds. The electrical ability of a cell in the animal kingdom is influenced by the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of the lipid layer as well as proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized due to the voltage differential called membrane potential. For neuronal cells, axons and cells have distinct electrical properties. The most exuberant part of neuron is called the axon hillock. However, axons and cells body also become excited. In the axon hillock, the resting voltage is -70 mV and the threshold voltage is -55 MV. Synaptic inputs into the neuron result in depolarization which causes membrane potential to increase or decrease. Action potentials are generated when enough depolarization accumulates and the membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

Action potential is the outcome on the activities of voltage-gated channels that reside in the plasma membrane of cells. A voltage-gated ion channel is actually a cluster of proteins that remains embedded in plasma membrane and produces actions potential due to the fact that it could generate positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for monitoring the status of Ion channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback circuit proceeds with full intensity. The duration and the amplitude are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated Ion Channels. Several types of ion channels have been discovered that cause positive feedback cycles that eventually lead to the generation of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium-channels are involved in generation of faster potentials that mimic those of nerve impulse. Lesser ones, such as those created in muscles are controlled by the calcium ion channels. The most extensively studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion networks that play an important role in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
