In the animal cell, generally two kinds of these voltages are described, for instance, one which is triggered by voltage-gated sodium channels, while the other occurs due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Voltage-gated sodium channels are involved in the generation of higher-frequency potentials like those of nerve impulses. The slower ones, like those generated in the muscles are controlled by the calcium ion channels.The most researched voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels that are involved in greater speed of nerve impulse conduction.
