An action potential occurs that causes the membrane potential of a cell increases but then decreases. It is a characteristic property of many animal cells , including neurons, muscle cells and endocrin cells. Plant cells also produce them. Neurons play a very crucial role in cell-tocell communications. in pancreas beta cell action potentials are linked with the release of insulin. Plasma membrane is a type in voltage-gated, ion-channels that are used for producing action potential. These channels remain closed even when their membrane potential is within the resting potential of the cell . However when the membrane potential rises then the channels will become active. When the channels become active, they let inward flow sodium ions that boost the membrane potential. The rapid inward flow sodium ions alters the membrane's polarity and they turn off. After that potassium channels become activated and the flow outward of potassium ions . In the process, the membrane returns to its neutral state. A transient , negative shift known as refractory time prevents the back travel of the action potential. In the animal cell, generally two kinds of these voltages are described, for instance, one which is triggered by voltage-gated sodium channels, while the other occurs due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells show the same voltage between their external and internal environments. The cell's voltage is measured in millivolts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is -70mV. Most cells have minimal voltage fluctuations have been observed for their existence, but in some cells this may be a common characteristic. Certain cells also exhibit upward and downward cycles as the voltage decreases and increases. The time between these potentials differ across a broad range. In brain cells the up and down process of action possible are executed in less then a thousandth of a second. However, in different types of cells, the cycle may last for several seconds. The electrical properties of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent on the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of an outer layer of lipids as well as proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized because they keep the same voltage, also known as membrane potential. In case of cells, neurons and axons, dendrites and cell bodies have different electrical properties. The most exuberant part of neuron is the axon hillock. However, the axon and body can also be excited. In the axon hillock, the resting current is around 70 mV and the threshold is 55 mV. Neuronal synaptic interactions trigger depolarization which causes the membrane potential to rise or fall. Action potentials are produced when enough depolarization has occurred and the membrane voltage reaches the threshold.

Action potential is the outcome from the voltage-gated channels present in the plasma membrane of cells. A voltage-gated , ion channel is actually a cluster of proteins which remain in the plasma membrane. This produces action potential as it may produce the positive feedback loop. Membrane potential plays a role in controlling the state of Ion channels. The action potential is created when the positive feedback cycle goes on at full-speed. The duration and intensity are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the voltage-gated Ion Channels. Many kinds of ionchannels are known to produce positive feedback cycles that eventually produce these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels are involved in the generation of higher-frequency potentials like those of nerve impulses. The slower ones, like those generated in the muscles are controlled by the calcium ion channels. The most researched voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels that are involved in greater speed of nerve impulse conduction.
