The action potential is a process in which the membrane potential for a specific cell initially increases but then decreases. It is the characteristic property of a variety of human cells, which include muscle cells, neuron cells, and the endocrine cell. Certain plant cells also produce these. Neurons play an essential role in cell-tocell communications. In the beta cells of the pancreas, action potentials are linked with it being released by insulin. Plasma membrane is a type of voltage-gated ion channels for creating action potential. The channels remain closed at times when membrane potential is within the potential at rest of the cell . However when the membrane potential rises it opens the channels. When the channels are inactive, they allow the flow of sodium ions. This can increase your membrane's potential. The rapid flow of sodium ions leads to a change in the membrane's polarity and in turn, they disappear. After that potassium channels become activated , and it is a flow of the potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane returns back to its original position. A transient negative shift referred to as refractory period prevents back traveling of the action voltage. In animal cells generally two types of these potentials are recognized, for instance, one is generated due to the voltage-gated sodium channels and the second that is caused by voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells keep some degree of voltage variation between their internal and external environments. The cell's voltage is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is around -70 mV. In the majority of cells, little voltage fluctuations are known to occur however in some cells this may be a common characteristic. Certain cells may also exhibit variations in the voltage, as the voltage drops and increases. The time between these potentials differ across a broad range. In brain cells the up and down process of action possible are completed in less than thousandth of a second. However, in other cells, the sequences can take as long as a couple of seconds. The electrical power of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent on its membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of the lipid layer as well as proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulation.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized , as they sustain a voltage variation called membrane potential. For dendrites, neurons, axons and the body of the cell have distinct electrical characteristics. The most stimulated part of neurons is the axon hillock, but the axon and the cell body can also be stimulated. The axon hillock's resting potential is 70 mV and the threshold is at -55 millivolts. Synaptic inputs into the neuron induce depolarization and cause the membrane potential to rise or fall. Action potentials are generated when enough depolarization develops until the membrane current reaches an upper limit.

Action potential is the outcome from the voltage-gated channels which are located within the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated , ion channel is in fact a collection consisting of proteins that stay inside the plasma membrane. These proteins produce actions potential due to the fact that it could generate the positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is the main factor responsible for monitoring the status of these channels. Action potential is generated during the time that the feedback cycle occurs at full strength. Its duration and amplitude are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated Ion Channels. Many types of ion channels exist that can generate positive feedback and create these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels are involved in the generation of stronger potentials similar to nerve impulses. Slower ones like those produced in the muscles cells are controlled by the calcium Ion channels. The ones that have been the most extensively studied voltage -gated Ion channels are the sodium ion networks that play an important role in faster nerve impulse conduction.
