Action potential is a phenomenon where the membrane potential in a cell is first increased before decreasing. This is a characteristic trait for a range of animal cells namely, muscles, neurons, and endocrin cells. Plant cells can also produce them. Neurons play the most important function in cell-to-cell communication. In pancreas beta cells, action potential is associated with it being released by insulin. Plasma membrane is a type of ion channels that are voltage-gated for producing action potential. The channels remain closed while the membrane's current potential close to its resting capacity of the cell but if the membrane potential increases the channels then they open. When the channels become active, they permit an inward flow of sodium ions which increases their membrane voltage. The rapid inward flow of sodium ions affects the membrane's polarity which causes them to are inactive. After that potassium channels become activated and it is a flow potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane is returned to its resting state. A temporary negative shift, known as refractory is a way to stop back running of the action kinetic. In animal cells generally two kinds of these voltages are well-known, such as one that is caused because of voltage-gated sodium channels, and another that results from calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells show in a voltage differential between their environment and their inside. The cell's voltage is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is -70 mV. For the vast majority of cells, no voltage fluctuations are known for their existence, but in some cells this can be a normal characteristic. Some cells exhibit variations in the voltage, as the voltage increases and declines. The duration of these potentials can be varied over a broad spectrum. In brain cells the up and down cycle of the action potential is completed in a fraction of a millisecond of a second, whereas in other cells, the processes can last several seconds. The electrical power of a cell in the animal kingdom is influenced by the membrane structure. The cell membrane is composed of layers of lipids, and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

All animal cells are electro-polarized. They keep an electric voltage which is called membrane potential. In case of neurons, axons, dendrites and the cell body possess different electrical characteristics. The area that is most excitable in an neuron is its axon hillock, however the axon as well as the cell body too are excited. At the axon hillock the remaining potential is -70mV and the threshold voltage is at -55 millivolts. Synaptic messages to the brain lead to depolarization. This causes the membrane potential to rise or fall. Action potential is produced when sufficient depolarization takes place and that membrane potential reaches an upper limit.

The action potential results by the action of voltage-gated channels which are located within the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated Ion Channel is in fact a collection of proteins which remain in the plasma membrane. It generates action potential as it may trigger a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is the main factor responsible for controlling the condition of Ion channels. The action potential is created in the event that the positive feedback process is carried out at full force. The time and amplitude of the action are dependent on the bio-physical properties associated with the voltage-gated ion channel. Ion channels of various types are available that are believed to generate positive feedback cycles , which eventually produce these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels are involved in the creation of fast possibles that resemble those produced by nerve impulse. Slower ones like those produced in muscle cells are controlled by the calcium Ion channels. The the most intensely studied voltage-gated Ion channels are sodium ion channels participating in quicker nerve impulse conduction.
