Action potential is a phenomenon in which the potential of the membrane for a specific cell initially increases before decreasing. It is an characteristic characteristic of a variety of animal cells namely, muscles, neurons, and hormone-producing cells. Certain plant cells also produce them. Neurons play a very crucial function in cell-to-cell communication. In the beta cells of the pancreas, the action potential is associated with it being released by insulin. Plasma membranes feature a unique type of voltage-gated channels for creating action potential. The channels remain closed once the membrane's voltage is near those of the cell . However when the membrane's potential is increased then the channels will become active. As the channels become open, they allow an inward flow sodium ions which increases the membrane potential. The fast inward flow of sodium ions affects the membrane's polarity which causes them to stop functioning. The potassium channels, after which, become activated , and then there's an outward flowing of the potassium ions . This causes the membrane is returned to its neutral state. A transient negative shift , also known as refractory interval prevents further movement of the action potential. In animal cells , two varieties of these possibles are in existence, one from voltage-gated potassium channels, the other is caused by voltage-gated calcium channels.

A majority of cells experience an electrical voltage gap between their interior and exterior environment. The cell's voltage is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is around -70 mV. Most cells have minor voltage fluctuations are observed to happen, but in a few cells, this is a common characteristic. Certain cells may also exhibit up and down cycles as they increase and decrease in voltage. The time between these potentials can be varied over a broad spectrum. In brain cells, the up and down motion potential cycle are completed in less that a thousandth of a second, whereas in other cells, the cycles may take several seconds. The electrical function of a cell in the animal kingdom is influenced by the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of one layer of lipids along with proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized , as they sustain a voltage variation called membrane potential. In case of dendrites, neurons, axons and the body of the cell have distinct electrical properties. Most excitable portion of neuron is the Axon hillock, however, axons as well as cells body are also excited. At the axon hillock the resting potential is -70 mV and the threshold is at -55 mgV. Synaptic inputs into the neuron lead to depolarization. This causes the membrane potential to increase or fall. Action potentials are produced when enough depolarization has occurred and the membrane's potential exceeds a threshold value.

The action potential results on the activities of voltage-gated channels within the plasma membrane of a cell. Ion channels that are voltage-gated are actually a cluster made of proteins. They remain in plasma membrane and produces the action potential, which can result in a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is accountable for maintaining the state of the these channels. The action potential is created when the positive feedback cycle goes on at full-speed. The time and amplitude are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the voltage-gated ion channels. Numerous types of ion-channels are known to produce positive feedback and create these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in the generation of higher-frequency possibles that resemble those produced by nerve impulses. Slower ones , like those made by muscles cells are controlled by calcium ion channels. The ones that have been the most extensively studied voltage -gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels which are involved in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
