Synaptic messages to the brain cause depolarization, which causes the membrane potential to rise or fall. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization accumulates and the membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

The action potential results that voltage-gated ion channels located in the plasma membrane of cells. A voltage-gated ion channel is actually a group of proteins that remains embedded in plasma membrane and produces the action potential, which can trigger positive feedback loop. Membrane potential plays a role in controlling the condition of ion channels. The action potential is created when the positive feedback cycle gets full power. Its duration and amplitude are determined by the biophysical properties of the ion channel voltage-gated. Different types of ion channels are known to produce positive feedback processes that result in the production of these potentials. They are involved in generation of faster potentials that are similar to nerve impulse. They are slower than those that occur in the muscles cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The most researched voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channels which are involved in faster nerve impulse conduction.
