Action potential is an occurrence where the membrane potential of a cell increases and then decreases. This is a characteristic trait of a variety of animal cells namely, muscles cells, neurons and endocrinological cells. Some plant cells also produce them. Neurons play an important function in cell-to-cell communication. in pancreas beta cell action potential is associated with in the production of insulin. Plasma membrane has a particular type of voltage-gated ion channels that are responsible for producing action potential. These channels are shut in the event that membrane potentials are close to the resting potential of the cell . However, when the membrane potential rises then the channels open. When the channels become active, they allow for an inward flow sodium ions, which boosts the potential of membranes. The rapid flow inward of sodium ions can alter the membrane's polarity and consequently they disappear. Following this, potassium channels become activated and the flow outward of the potassium ions . The result is that the membrane returns to its resting state. The transient shift in negative known as refractory period prevents back movement of the action potential. In the cells of animals, generally two types of these potentials are acknowledged, one of which is due to the voltage-gated sodium channels, while the other occurs due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

In most cells, there is the same voltage between their interior and exterior environment. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70mV. In the majority cells, low voltage variations are thought to take place, but in certain cells this is a usual feature. Cells can show an up-and-down cycle as they increase and decrease in voltage. The duration of these potentials fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells the up and down motion potential cycle are accomplished in less than one thousandth of a second. In other cells, these cycles could take several seconds. The electrical properties of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent upon the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of an outer layer of lipids as well as proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized , as they sustain an electric charge that is known as membrane potential. For dendrites, neurons, axons and cells have distinct electrical properties. The most exuberant part of neuron is called the axon hillock. However, axons and cells body too can be stimulated. The axon hillock's resting potential is 70 mV and the threshold potential is 55 MV. The synaptic inputs to the neurons result in depolarization that causes the membrane potential to rise or decrease. Action potential is produced when enough depolarization occurs and the membrane potential reaches an upper limit.

Action potential is the outcome from the voltage-gated channels present in the plasma membrane of cells. The voltage-gated channel is actually a group of proteins , which are encased in plasma membrane and produces actions potential due to the fact that it could generate a positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for controlling the level of Ion channels. The action potential is created as the feedback loop occurs at full strength. The duration and the amplitude are determined by the biophysical properties of the voltage-gated ion channels. Several types of ion channels exist that can generate positive feedback circuits that ultimately cause the creation of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels play a role in the generation of higher-frequency potentials like those of nerve impulses. They are slower than those that occur by muscle cells are mediated by calcium Ion channels. The most studied voltage-gated Ion channels are sodium-ion channels that contribute to more rapid nerve impulse conduction.
