Action potential is a phenomenon that causes the membrane potential for a specific cell initially increases then decreases. It is a typical characteristic of a variety of animal cells including muscles, neurons, and the endocrine cell. Some plant cells also make these. Neurons play an important function in cell-to-cell communication. in pancreas beta cell action potential is associated with the release of insulin. Plasma membrane is a type of ion channels with voltage-gated voltages for producing action potential. These channels are shut at times when membrane potential is within those of the cell . However, If the membrane's current potential rises it opens the channels. The channels that are active allow an inward flow sodium ions. This increases the membrane potential. The rapid flow of sodium ions causes a change in the polarity of the membrane and they become inactive. The potassium channels then become active and it is a flow potassium ions due to which the membrane is returned back to its original position. A temporary negative shift, known as the refractory phase prevents the return traveling of the action voltage. In animal cells , typically two types of these potentials are known for example, one that is caused due to the voltage-gated sodium channels, and the second one that is produced due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

In most cells, there is a voltage difference between the outside and inside. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is around -70 mV. In the majority of cells few voltage fluctuations are believed to be present, however in some cells this is a regular feature. Some cells show variations in the voltage, as the voltage drops and increases. The duration of these voltages vary over a wide range. In brain cells the up and down process of action possible are completed in less that a thousandth of a second while in other types of cells , sequences can take as long as a couple of seconds. The electrical power of a cell in the animal kingdom is influenced by the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of layers of lipids, and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized since they have an electrical voltage that is called membrane potential. In case of dendrites, neurons, axons and the cell body possess different electrical characteristics. The most active part of neuron is the axon hillock. However, the axon, dendrites, and cell body too are excited. The axon hillock's remaining potential is -70mV and the threshold is at -55 millivolts. Synaptic inputs to the neuron result in depolarization that causes the membrane potential to increase or fall. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization develops until the membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

The action potential results of the activity of voltage-gated ion channels present in the plasma membrane of cells. A voltage-gated ion channel is actually a group of proteins which remain in the plasma membrane. This produces action potential because it can trigger a positive feedback loop. Membrane power is responsible for controlling the level of ion channels. Action potential is generated during the time that the feedback cycle takes place at full intensity. The time and amplitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated ion channels. Several types of ion channels are recognized that create positive feedback and lead to the generation of these potentials. The sodium channels that are voltage-gated participate in the creation of more powerful possibles that resemble those produced by nerve impulse. These are the ones that are slower, similar to those found in muscles cells are controlled by calcium ion channels. The most thoroughly studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium-ion channels that contribute to faster nerve impulse conduction.
