A process called an action potential happens that occurs when the membrane potential of a particular cell increases and then decreases. It is a typical characteristic to a variety of animal cells , namely muscles cells, nerve cells, and Endocrine cells. Some plant cells also make them. Neurons play an important function in cell-to-cell communication. In pancreas beta cells, action potential is connected with it being released by insulin. Plasma membranes contain a distinct type of voltage-gated ion channels for creating action potential. The channels remain closed when the membrane potential is close to what is the limit of cells, however when the membrane potential rises it opens the channels. When the channels open they permit an inward flow sodium ions, which increase the cell's membrane potency. The rapid flow inward of sodium ions alters the membrane's polarity and consequently they turn off. After this, potassium channels get activated , and inward flows of the potassium ions , causing the membrane is returned in its normal state. A temporary negative shift, known as refractory period prevents back moving of the action-potential. In animal cells , typically two kinds of these potentials can be acknowledged, one that is caused due to the voltage-gated sodium channels and the other which is caused by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

The majority of cells have a voltage difference between their internal and external environments. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is around -70 mV. In the majority cells, few voltage fluctuations are believed as occurring, however in certain cells this is an expected characteristic. Some cells exhibit up and down cycles as they increase and decrease in voltage. The time between these potentials differ across a broad range. In brain cells the down and up cycles of action potentials are executed in less then a thousandth of a second. In other types of cells , cycles could take several seconds. The electrical activity of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent on the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of an outer layer of lipids as well as proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized and maintain the voltage differential called membrane potential. In case of the neurons, dendrites and the cell body all have different electrical properties. The most stimulated part of neurons is the axon hillock. However, axons and cells body also become excited. At the axon hillock the threshold potential for resting is -70mV and the threshold potential is 55 mgV. Synaptic connections to the nerve trigger depolarization which causes the membrane potential to rise or fall. A potential for action is created when enough depolarization occurs and that membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

The action potential results that voltage-gated ion channels found within the plasma membrane of a cell. The voltage-gated ion channel in fact a collection composed of proteins that remain in plasma membranes and generates movement potential because it is able to give rise to a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is accountable for control of the activity of these channels. The action potential is created in the event that the positive feedback process takes place at full intensity. The duration as well as the magnitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. Several types of ion channels are recognized that create positive feedback loops and eventually cause the creation of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels are involved in the creation of fast potentials that mimic those of nerve impulse. These are the ones that are slower, similar to those found in the muscles cells are controlled by the calcium ion channels. The most intensively studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion networks that play an important role in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
