A transient negative shift referred to as refractory is a way to stop back travel of the action potential. In animal cells typically two kinds of these voltages are well-known, such as one which is triggered from voltage-gated potassium channels, and the second one that is produced due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

In most cells, there is an electrical difference between their internal and external environments. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is around -70 mV. In majority of cells very little voltage fluctuations are known to occur but in some cells this may be a common feature. Some cells also display periodic up and down oscillations as they increase and decrease in voltage. The duration of these potentials can vary widely. In brain cells the up and down action potential cycle is executed in less then a thousandth of a second, whereas in other cells, these intervals may be prolonged to several seconds. The electrical characteristic of an animal cell is dependent on the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulation.

Membrane potential is the main factor responsible for managing the state of Ion channels. The action potential is created in the event that the positive feedback process proceeds with full intensity. The duration as well as the magnitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion-channels that are voltage-gated. Many types of ion channels have been identified which generate positive feedback processes that result in the production of these potentials.
