Action potential is an event that occurs when the membrane potential of a cell first increases then decreases. It is an characteristic characteristic of several cell types in animals, such as muscles cells, neurons and hormone-producing cells. Certain plant cells also produce these. Neurons play a very crucial part in cell-to cell communication. In pancreas beta cells, action potentials are connected to an insulin release. Plasma membrane has a particular type of ion channels with voltage-gated voltages for creating action potential. The channels are closed at times when membrane potential is near those of the cell . However, when the membrane's potential is increased the channels then they open. When they are opened, they permit the inward flow of sodium ions. This increases the cell's membrane potency. The swift inward flow of sodium ions causes a change in the membrane's polarity and , as a consequence, they turn off. Following that, potassium channels are activated , and inward flows of potassium ions due to which the membrane returns to its resting state. A transient positive shift known as refractory period prevents back motion of the potential. In animal cells , usually two kinds of these voltages are in existence, one of which is through voltage-gated sodium channels and another one that is caused by voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells keep some degree of voltage variation between their internal and external environments. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is about -70 mV. In the majority cells, few voltage fluctuations are believed to occur but in some cells, this is a common feature. Some cells also show periodic up and down oscillations as the voltage decreases and increases. The duration of these voltages differ across a broad range. In brain cells, the up and down sequence of action potentials are completed in less than thousandth of a second, whereas in other cells, these cycle may last for several seconds. The electrical power of an animal cell is influenced by the membrane structure. The cell membrane is composed of an lipid layer and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulation.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized and maintain an electric voltage which is known as membrane potential. For neurons, dendrites, axons and the cell body possess different electrical characteristics. The most active part of neuron is the axon hillock however axons and the cell body too are excited. The axon hillock's remaining potential is -70mV and the threshold potential is 55 MV. Synaptic messages to the brain trigger depolarization which causes the membrane potential to increase or fall. Action potential is created when enough depolarization is accumulated and the membrane potential exceeds the threshold.

Action potential is the result of the activity of voltage-gated ion channels located in the plasma membranes of cells. The voltage-gated ion channel in fact a collection of proteins which remain in the plasma membrane. It produces action potential as it may produce an positive feedback loop. Membrane voltage is responsible for managing the state of Ion channels. The action potential is created whenever the positive feedback continues at its fullest. The duration and the amplitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion-channels that are voltage-gated. Many kinds of ionchannels exist that can generate positive feedback mechanisms and produce these potentials. They are involved in the production of high-speed impulses like nerve impulses. The slower ones, like those generated in muscles cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels. The the most intensely studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels involved in greater speed of nerve impulse conduction.
