Plasma membrane has special type of ion channels with voltage-gated voltages for creating action potential. These channels remain closed while the membrane's current potential within an equilibrium potential for the cell but If the membrane's current potential rises and the channels begin to open, they become active. When the channels become active, they allow an inward flow of sodium ions that boost its membrane potential. The rapid flow of sodium ions results in changing the polarity of the membrane and consequently they turn off. The potassium channels, after which, become active and that is followed by an outward flow of the potassium ions . In the process, the membrane is returned to its resting condition. A transient negative shift , also known as the refractory phase prevents the return travelling of the action potential. In animal cells , two kinds of these potentials are known for example, one through voltage-gated sodium channels, while the other is produced due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

In most cells, there is a voltage difference between their surroundings and their interior. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is about -70 mV. In the majority of cells, minor voltage fluctuations are observed to occur , however in certain cells this is a regular feature. Some cells also display oscillations between up and down when the voltage rises and falls. The duration of these potentials differ across a broad range. In brain cells, the up and down cycle of the action potential is completed in less than a thousandth of a second while in other types of cells , cycles may take several seconds. The electrical characteristic of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent on the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of one layer of lipids along with proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulator.

This causes the membrane potential to rise or decrease. Action potential is created when enough depolarization accumulates and the membrane voltage reaches a threshold value.

Action potential is the outcome by the action of voltage-gated channels in the plasma membrane of a cell. The voltage-gated channel is actually a group of proteins that are embedded in plasma membrane and produces an action potential since it could produce the positive feedback loop. Membrane current is responsible controlling the level of ion channels. Action potential is generated when the feedback cycle runs at full speed. The duration and intensity are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. Numerous types of ion-channels are available that are believed to generate positive feedback processes that result in the production of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channel are involved in the creation of fast potentials that mimic those of nerve impulses. Slower ones like those produced by muscle cells are controlled by the calcium ion channels.The most intensively studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channels involved in greater speed of nerve impulse conduction.
