Action potential is an occurrence where the potential for the membrane of a cell increases but then decreases. It is a typical characteristic to a variety of living cells, including muscle cells, neurons, and endocrin cells. Some plant cells also make them. Neurons play an important role in cell-to-cell communication. In the beta cells of the pancreas, action potentials are linked with it being released by insulin. Plasma membrane has special type of ion channels with voltage-gated voltages for creating action potential. The channels are closed when the membrane potential is near the potential at rest of the cell , but should the membrane potential increase then the channels become active. Once the channels are open, they permit an inward flow sodium ions that boost the membrane potential. The swift inward flow of sodium ions alters the membrane's polarity and , in the process, are inactive. In the following, potassium channels become active and that is followed by an outward flow of the potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane is returned in its normal state. A transient negative shift known as refractory period blocks back motion of the potential. In animal cells , two kinds of these potentials are described, for instance, one of which is due to voltage-gated sodium channels, the other can be produced by voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells keep an electrical voltage gap between their internal and external environments. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is about -70 mV. Most cells have few voltage fluctuations are believed for their existence, but in some cells this may be a common characteristic. Cells can show variations in the voltage, as the voltage drops and increases. The duration of these voltages are variable across a variety of. In brain cells the down and up cycle of action potential are completed in less than thousandth of a second. In other cell types, the cycles could take several seconds. The electrical ability of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent upon the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of a layer of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized due to an electric charge that is called membrane potential. For neurons, , dendrites and cell bodies have different electrical characteristics. The most active part of neuron is the axon hillock. However, the axon and body too can be stimulated. At the axon hillock the resting voltage is -70 mV and the threshold potential is at -55 mV. Synaptic stimulation to the neuron result in depolarization which causes membrane potential to increase or fall. Action potentials are produced when enough depolarization has occurred and the membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

The action potential results of the activity of voltage-gated ion channels within the plasma membranes of cells. The voltage-gated ion channel actually a group of proteins which remain in the plasma membrane. It produces action potential as it may create positive feedback loop. Membrane current is responsible controlling the condition of these channels. Action potential is generated by the positive feedback cycle that proceeds with full intensity. The time and the intensity are determined by the biophysical properties of the voltage-gated ionchannels. Ion channels of various types are identified that generate positive feedback circuits that ultimately result in the production of these potentials. The sodium channels with voltage are involved in the generation of stronger potentials that are similar to nerve impulses. Slower ones like those produced by muscles cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels. The most rigorously researched voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion channel that participate in faster nerve impulse communication.
