In animal cells , usually two types of potentials are acknowledged, one of which is via voltage-gated channels, while the other is caused by voltage-gated calcium channels.

The majority of cells have the voltage of their exterior and interior environments. The cell's voltage is measured in milli volts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is -70 mV.
