The electrical power of an animal cell is dependent on the membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of an outer layer of lipids as well as proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

Action potentials are generated when enough depolarization has occurred and the membrane current reaches a threshold value.

Ion channels that are voltage-gated are actually a cluster of proteins , which are encased inside the plasma membrane. These proteins produce action potential as it may be the cause of positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is the main factor responsible for monitoring the status of ion channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback cycle gets full power. The duration and the amplitude are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the voltage-gated ionchannels. Several types of ion channels exist that can generate positive feedback cycles , which eventually create these potentials. They are involved in the creation of more powerful possibles that resemble those produced by nerve impulses. The slower ones, like those generated in muscle cells are controlled by the calcium ion channels.The most researched voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels that are involved in faster nerve impulse conduction.
