Action potential refers to an event in which the membrane potential in a cell is first increased then decreases. It is an characteristic characteristic that is present in a wide variety of animal cells namely, neurons, muscle cells and endocrine cells. Plant cells can also produce them. Neurons play an important part in cell-to cell communication. The beta cells of the pancreas the action potential is associated with in the production of insulin. Plasma membranes feature a unique type of voltage-gated ion channels for producing action potential. These channels are shut while the membrane's current potential within what is the limit of the cell . However if the membrane potential increases the channels then they open. As the channels become open, they allow the flow of sodium ions that boost your membrane's potential. The fast inward flow of sodium ions leads to a change in the membrane's polarity which causes them to turn off. After this, potassium channels get activated and they are able to flow outward potassium ions . This causes the membrane returns to its original state. A transient negative shift referred to as refractory period blocks back running of the action kinetic. In animal cells generally two types of potentials are described, for instance, one through voltage-gated sodium channels, the other can be produced by voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells show the same voltage between their interior and exterior environment. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70mV. In majority of cells very no voltage fluctuations are known to be present, however in some cells, this is a common feature. Some cells show an up-and-down cycle as the voltage increases and declines. The time between these potentials vary across a range of. In brain cells, the up and down cycle of the action potential is completed in a fraction of a millisecond of a second. However, in other cells, the cycle may last for several seconds. The electrical ability of an animal cell is influenced by the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of an lipid layer and proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulation.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized since they have the difference in voltage known as membrane potential. For cells, neurons and axons, dendrites and the cell body possess different electrical characteristics. The most excitable component of a neuron is the axon hillock but axon and cell body too can be stimulated. At the axon hillock the resting potential is -70 mV and the threshold potential is -55 millivolts. Synaptic inputs into the neuron result in depolarization which causes membrane potential to rise or decrease. A potential for action is created when enough depolarization occurs and the membrane voltage reaches an upper limit.

Action potential is the outcome of activity of voltage-gated ion channels within the plasma membranes of cells. Ion channels that are voltage-gated are actually a cluster of proteins that are embedded in plasma membrane and produces actions potential due to the fact that it could trigger an positive feedback loop. Membrane potential plays a role in setting the parameters of these channels. Action potential is generated whenever the positive feedback takes place at full intensity. The time and the intensity are determined by the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated ionchannels. Many kinds of ionchannels are available that are believed to generate positive feedback circuits that ultimately lead to the generation of these potentials. The sodium channels that are voltage-gated participate in the generation of larger potentials like those of nerve impulse. Slower ones like those produced in the muscles cells are controlled by calcium ion channels. The most studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels involved in quicker nerve impulse conduction.
