The action potential is a process that occurs when the membrane potential of a cell initially increases then decreases. This is a characteristic trait that is present in a wide variety of animal cells , namely neurons, muscle cells and endocrine cells. Some plant cells also make these. When the channels open they permit an inward flow of sodium ions, which increase your membrane's potential. The rapid flow of sodium ions can alter the membrane's polarity which causes them to become inactive. The potassium channels then become activated and that is followed by an outward flow of potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane is returned to its original state. A transient negative shift known as refractory time prevents the back moving of the action-potential. In animal cells typically two types of these potentials exist, recognized, for instance, one that is generated due to the voltage-gated sodium channels, and the second one that is produced due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

A majority of cells experience the voltage of their interior and exterior environment. The cell's voltage is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70mV. In the majority cells, little voltage fluctuations are known to take place, but in certain cells, this is a common characteristic. Certain cells may also exhibit the cycle of up and down as the voltage drops and increases. The duration of these potentials are variable across a variety of. In brain cells, the up and down action potential cycle is complete in less than the thousandth of a second. In other cell types, the actions can last for a long time. The electrical function of an animal cell depends on the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of a layer of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized as they maintain an electrical voltage that is called membrane potential. In case of neurons, axons, dendrites and the body of the cell have distinct electrical properties. The most excitable part of an individual neuron is the hillock however axons and the cell body are also excited. At the axon , the resting current is around 70 mV and the threshold potential is at -55 mV. Synaptic connections to the nerve result in depolarization that causes the membrane potential to rise or fall. It is produced when enough depolarization happens and that membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

Action potential is the result on the activities of voltage-gated channels that reside in the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated Ion Channel is actually a cluster of proteins that are embedded inside the plasma membrane. These proteins produce action potential as it may cause a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is responsible for managing the state of ion channels. Action potential is generated in the event that the positive feedback process occurs at full strength. The duration and the amplitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated ion channels. A variety of Ion Channels have been discovered that cause positive feedback mechanisms and create these potentials.
