Action potential refers to an event that occurs when the membrane potential of a living cell first increases and then decreases. The rapid flow of sodium ions changes the polarity of the membrane and consequently they are inactive. Following that, potassium channels are activated and it is a flow potassium ions . As a result, the membrane returns back to its original position. The transient shift in negative known as refractory interval prevents further traveling of the action voltage. In animal cells typically two types of potentials are understood, one is generated through voltage-gated sodium channels and the other which can be produced by voltage-gated calcium channels.

Most cells have some degree of voltage variation between the outside and inside. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is about -70 mV. In majority of cells very little voltage fluctuations are known to happen, but in a few cells this is a regular feature. Some cells also display the cycle of up and down as the voltage fluctuates. The duration of these voltages can be varied over a broad spectrum. In brain cells the down and up motion potential cycle are performed in less than a thousandth of a second while in other cells, cycles may take several seconds. The electrical ability of a cell in the animal kingdom is influenced by the membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of two layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized , as they sustain a voltage variation called membrane potential. For the neurons, dendrites and cell bodies have different electrical characteristics. The most excitable component of an neuron is its axon hillock but axon and cell body can also be excited. At the axon , the resting potential is -70mV and the threshold is 55 MV. Synaptic signals to the neuron lead to depolarization. This causes the membrane potential to rise or decrease. An action potential is created once enough depolarization is accumulated and the membrane potential is at the threshold.

The action potential results on the activities of voltage-gated channels located in the plasma membranes of cells. A voltage-gated ion channel is actually a cluster of proteins that remains embedded in the plasma membrane. This produces the action potential, which can cause a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential plays a role in monitoring the status of Ion channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback cycle occurs at full strength. The time and amplitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion channels with voltage-gated voltage. There are a variety of ion channel types that are known that produce positive feedback circuits that ultimately result in the production of these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in the creation of fast potentials similar to nerve impulses. The slower ones, like those generated by muscles are controlled by the calcium ion channels.The most intensively studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels involved in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
