Action potential is an occurrence that occurs when the membrane potential of a cell first increases but then decreases. It is the characteristic property of several cell types in animals, such as muscle cells, neural cells, and endocrinological cells. Certain plant cells also produce these. Neurons play an important part in cell-to cell communication. In beta cells of pancreas the action potential is associated with that release of insulin. Plasma membranes contain a distinct type of voltage-gated ion channel for creating action potential. These channels remain closed at times when membrane potential is within that of the cell , but when the membrane's potential increases and the channels begin to open, they become active. If the channels are open, they permit an inward flow sodium ions. This increases its membrane potential. The rapid flow inward of sodium ions affects the membrane's polarity and consequently they become inactive. Following that, potassium channels are activated , and that is followed by an outward flow potassium ions . The result is that the membrane returns back to its original position. A transient negative shift known as refractory periods prevents back forward motion of an action potential. In animal cells typically two kinds of these potentials are understood, one which is produced via voltage-gated channels, and one that is caused by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

A majority of cells experience an electric field between their surroundings and their interior. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is about -70 mV. For the vast majority of cells, no voltage fluctuations are known to occur but in some cells, this is a common feature. Certain cells may also exhibit the cycle of up and down as the voltage increases and declines. The duration of these voltages can be varied over a broad spectrum. In brain cells the down and up cycle of action potential are completed in less than a thousandth of a second. In other cells, sequences can take as long as a couple of seconds. The electrical function of a cell in the animal kingdom is influenced by the membrane structure. The cell membrane is composed of the lipid layer as well as proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized because they keep an electrical voltage that is called membrane potential. For neurons, dendrites, axons and the body of the cell have distinct electrical properties. The most excitable component of a neuron is the axon hillock. However, the axon, dendrites, and cell body are also excited. At the axon , the resting potential is 70 mV and the threshold voltage is 55 millivolts. The synaptic inputs to the neurons result in depolarization which causes membrane potential to increase or decrease. Action potentials are generated when enough depolarization is accumulated and the membrane's potential exceeds a threshold value.

Action potential is the result that voltage-gated ion channels in the plasma membranes of cells. The voltage-gated channel is in fact a collection made of proteins. They remain in plasma membrane and produces motion potential because it can result in positive feedback loop. Membrane voltage is responsible for managing the state of Ion channels. The action potential is created in the event that the positive feedback process proceeds with full intensity. The duration as well as the magnitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion channel voltage-gated. There are a variety of ion channel types that have been discovered that cause positive feedback cycles and ultimately result in the production of these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in the generation of stronger potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulse. Lesser ones, such as those created in the muscles are controlled by the calcium Ion channels.The most intensively studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion channel that participate in more rapid nerve impulse conduction.
