Action potential is an occurrence in which the potential of the membrane that a cell has first increases then decreases. It is the characteristic property of a variety of animal cells , namely muscle cells, neural cells, and endocrin cells. Plant cells also produce these. The rapid inward flow of sodium ions causes a change in the membrane's polarity and they cease to function. After this, potassium channels get activated , and there is an outward flow of the sodium ions. Due to this, the membrane returns to its resting condition. A transient , negative shift known as the refractory phase prevents the return moving of the action-potential. In animal cells typically two kinds of these potentials can be identified, for instance, one which is triggered by the voltage-gated calcium channels, and one that results from calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells show a voltage difference between their exterior and interior environments. The cell's voltage is measured in millivolts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is about -70 mV. For the vast majority of cells, no voltage fluctuations are known to happen, but in a few cells this may be a common characteristic. Some cells also display up and down cycles as they increase and decrease in voltage. The duration of these potentials fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells, the up and down sequence of action potentials are accomplished in less than one thousandth of a second while in other cells, the actions can last for a long time. The electrical power of an animal cell is dependent on the membrane structure. Cell membrane is made up of layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized due to an electric voltage which is called membrane potential. In case of dendrites, neurons, axons and the cell body possess different electrical properties. One of the most exciting parts of a neuron is the axon hillock. However, axons and cells body also become excited. At the axon , the resting potential is 70 mV and the threshold potential is 55 mgV. Synaptic connections to the nerve induce depolarization and cause the membrane potential to rise or fall. A potential for action is created when enough depolarization occurs and the membrane potential is at an upper limit.

Action potential is the result of activity of voltage-gated ion channels present in the plasma membranes of cells. An ion channel that is voltage-gated is actually a group made of proteins. They remain within the plasma membrane. They produce an action potential since it could produce positive feedback loop. Membrane current is responsible setting the parameters of Ion channels. Action potential is generated when the feedback cycle runs at full speed. The time and amplitude are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the voltage-gated ionchannels. A variety of Ion Channels exist that can generate positive feedback mechanisms and lead to the generation of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium-channels are involved in the production of high-speed potentials that are similar to nerve impulses. More slow ones such as those produced by muscles are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The the most intensely studied voltage-gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels that are involved in faster nerve impulse communication.
