It is an event in which the membrane voltage of a cell first increases before decreasing. It is a common characteristic of a variety of animal cells namely, muscles, neurons and endocrin cells. Certain plant cells also produce them. Neurons play an important role in cell-tocell communications. Beta cells of the pancreas action potentials are connected to that release of insulin. Plasma membrane has a particular type of voltage-gated ion channel for producing action potential. The channels are closed when the membrane potential is close to it's resting value of the cell . However when the membrane's potential increases then the channels will become active. When the channels open they allow the flow of sodium ions. This in turn increases its membrane potential. The fast inward flow of sodium ions result in changing the membrane's polarity and consequently they become inactive. Following this, potassium channels become active and they are able to flow outward of potassium ions , causing the membrane is returned to its original state. The transient shift in negative known as refractory period prevents back movement of the action potential. In animal cells generally , two types of these potentials exist, understood, one through voltage-gated sodium channels, the other is produced due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

In most cells, there is some degree of voltage variation between their interior and exterior environment. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is about -70 mV. In majority of cells very no voltage fluctuations are known to take place, but in certain cells this is a regular characteristic. Certain cells also exhibit periodic up and down oscillations as the voltage decreases and increases. The time between these potentials vary throughout a vast range. In brain cells the up and down cycles of action potentials are completed in a fraction of a millisecond of a second while in other types of cells , actions can last for a long time. The electrical activity of a cell in the animal kingdom is influenced by the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized due to the difference in voltage called membrane potential. In case of dendrites, neurons, axons and cell body have different electrical properties. One of the most exciting parts of a neuron is the axon hillock, however, axons as well as cells body too are excited. At the axon , the resting potential is -70mV and the threshold is -55 millivolts. Neuronal synaptic interactions result in depolarization which causes membrane potential to increase or fall. A potential for action is created when enough depolarization happens and the membrane voltage reaches the threshold.

Action potential is the result that voltage-gated ion channels that reside in the plasma membrane of cells. A voltage-gated ion channel is in fact a collection of proteins that are embedded in the plasma membrane. It generates an action potential since it could be the cause of positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is the main factor responsible for controlling the condition of these channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback cycle goes on at full-speed. The frequency and duration are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated ion channels. A variety of Ion Channels have been discovered that cause positive feedback processes that produce these potentials. The sodium channels that are voltage-gated participate in the creation of more powerful impulses like nerve impulse. More slow ones such as those produced by muscles are controlled by calcium ion channels.The ones that have been the most extensively studied voltage -gated ion channels are the sodium ion channels participating in quicker nerve impulse conduction.
