Action potential refers to an event that causes the membrane potential for a specific cell initially increases and then decreases. It is a characteristic property of a number of animal cells including neurons, muscle cells and endocrin cells. Some plant cells also make them. Neurons play an important role in cell-to-cell communication. In the beta cells of the pancreas, action potential is linked to in the production of insulin. Plasma membranes are made up of a special kind of ion channels with voltage-gated voltages for creating action potential. The channels remain closed once the membrane's voltage is close to an equilibrium potential for the cell but when the membrane potential rises it becomes active. When they are opened, they permit an inward flow of sodium ions that boost the potential of membranes. The rapid inward flow of sodium ions alters the polarity of the membrane and , as a consequence, they cease to function. After this, potassium channels get activated , and they are able to flow outward of the potassium ions , causing the membrane returns to its original state. The transient negative change known as refractory period prevents back traveling of the action voltage. In animal cells typically two types of these potentials exist, well-known, such as one by voltage-gated sodium channels, while the other results from calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

The majority of cells exhibit a voltage difference between their interior and exterior environment. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is about -70 mV. In most cells, few voltage fluctuations are believed to happen, but in a few cells, this is a common feature. Certain cells also exhibit variations in the voltage, as the voltage rises and falls. The duration of these voltages vary over a wide range. In brain cells the down and up sequence of action potentials are completed in less that a thousandth of a second. However, in other cell types, the processes can last several seconds. The electrical property of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent on its membrane structure. The cell membrane is composed of a layer of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized due to the same voltage, also known as membrane potential. For neurons, dendrites, axons and cell body have different electrical properties. The most active part of a neuron is the axon hillock, however the axon as well as the cell body also get excited. At the axon , the resting voltage is -70 mV and the threshold potential is 55 mV. Synaptic messages to the brain cause depolarization, which causes the membrane potential to rise or fall. Action potentials are produced when enough depolarization is accumulated and the membrane voltage reaches an upper limit.

Action potential is the result from the voltage-gated channels within the plasma membrane of cells. The voltage-gated ion channel in fact a collection of proteins that remains embedded in plasma membrane and produces action potential as it may create an positive feedback loop. Membrane power is responsible for setting the parameters of Ion channels. The action potential is created in the event that the positive feedback process continues at its fullest. The time and amplitude of the action are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the voltage-gated ion channels. Ion channels of various types exist that can generate positive feedback and result in the production of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium-channels are involved in the creation of fast potentials similar to nerve impulse. These are the ones that are slower, similar to those found by muscles cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The the most intensely studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion channels involved in more rapid nerve impulse conduction.
