Action potential refers to an event where the potential for the membrane of a cell first increases then decreases. Membrane potential is responsible for control of the activity of ion channels. The action potential is created by the positive feedback cycle that proceeds with full intensity. The time and amplitude of the action are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion channel voltage-gated. Several types of ion channels are available that are believed to generate positive feedback cycles that eventually produce these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels play a role in the generation of higher-frequency potentials like those of nerve impulse. Slower ones , like those made in the muscle cells are mediated by the calcium ion channels.The most thoroughly studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channels that are involved in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
