As the channels become open, they permit an inward flow sodium ions. This can increase the potential of membranes. The rapid flow inward of sodium ions changes the membrane's polarity and as a result they cease to function. The potassium channels, after which, become activated and you can see an outward movement of potassium ions , causing the membrane is returned back to its normal state. A transient negative shift referred to as the refractory phase prevents the return motion of the potential. In animal cells , typically two kinds of these voltages are acknowledged, one which is produced via voltage-gated channels, the other occurs due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

A majority of cells experience a voltage difference between the outside and inside. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is about -70 mV. The majority of cells show little voltage fluctuations are known to take place, but in certain cells this is an expected characteristic. Some cells show fluctuations in voltage as they increase and decrease in voltage. The duration of these voltages can vary widely. In brain cells the up and down motion potential cycle are completed in less that a thousandth of a second. However, in other cells, actions can last for a long time. The electrical ability of a cell in the animal kingdom is influenced by the membrane structure. The cell membrane is composed of layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized due to an electrical voltage that is called membrane potential. In case of neurons, axons, dendrites and the body of the cell have distinct electrical properties. The most stimulated part of neurons is the axon hillock. However, the axon and body also get excited. The axon hillock's resting potential is -70 mV and the threshold voltage is at -55 millivolts. Synaptic inputs into the neuron result in depolarization causing the membrane potential to increase or fall. It is produced when enough depolarization develops until the membrane voltage reaches an upper limit.

Action potential is the result of the work of voltage-gated Ion channels in the plasma membranes of cells. Ion channels that are voltage-gated are in fact a collection composed of proteins that remain in plasma membrane and produces an action potential in order to cause the positive feedback loop. Membrane voltage is responsible for control of the activity of ion channels. The action potential is created when the positive feedback circuit continues at its fullest. The duration and intensity are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. Many kinds of ionchannels are available that are believed to generate positive feedback loops and eventually create these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels play a role in the generation of stronger potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulse. Lesser ones, such as those created by muscles cells are controlled by calcium ion channels.The the most intensely studied voltage-gated Ion channels are sodium ion channels involved in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
