Due to this, the membrane returns back to its original position. A transient positive shift known as refractory period prevents back forward motion of an action potential. In the animal cell, generally two kinds of these voltages are described, for instance, one which is produced via voltage-gated channels and another one that occurs due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

They remain in plasma membrane and produces the action potential, which can cause a positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for monitoring the status of ion channels. The action potential is created when the positive feedback cycle takes place at full intensity. The time and amplitude of the action are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the ion channel voltage-gated. Different types of ion channels are available that are believed to generate positive feedback and produce these potentials. The sodium channels that are voltage-gated participate in generation of faster potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulses. The slower ones, like those generated by muscles are controlled by the calcium ion channels.The the most intensely studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion networks that play an important role in quicker nerve impulse conduction.
