An action potential occurs where the membrane potential of a cell increases then decreases. This is a characteristic trait to a variety of animal cells namely, muscles, neurons and cell types that are endocrine. Some plant cells also make these. Neurons play an important role in cell-to-cell communication. In pancreas beta cells, action potential is linked to releases of insulin. Plasma membrane has special type of voltage-gated ion channels that are responsible for creating action potential. These channels remain closed in the event that membrane potentials are close to an equilibrium potential for the cell , but when the membrane's potential increases then the channels are activated. When they are opened, they allow an inward flow of sodium ions, which increase that membrane's capacity. The rapid inward flow of sodium ions causes a change in the polarity of the membrane and , as a consequence, they turn off. The potassium channels, after which, become active and it is a flow of potassium ions . This causes the membrane returns back to its original position. A temporary negative shift, known as refractory duration prevents the reverse movement of the action potential. In the animal cell, generally two kinds of these are known for example, one because of voltage-gated sodium channels and the second that results from calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells maintain some degree of voltage variation between their external and internal environments. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is -70mV. The majority of cells show minimal voltage fluctuations have been observed to occur , however in certain cells, this is a standard characteristic. Some cells also show oscillations between up and down when the voltage rises and falls. The time between these potentials can be varied over a broad spectrum. In brain cells, the up and down cycles of action potentials are complete in less than the thousandth of a second, whereas in other cells, the cycles could take several seconds. The electrical ability of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent upon the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of one layer of lipids along with proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulation.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized since they have an electrical voltage that is called membrane potential. In case of neurons, axons, dendrites and the cell body possess different electrical properties. The most active part of one's neuron's axon hillock, but the axon and the cell body can also be excited. At the axon , the threshold potential for resting is -70mV and the threshold voltage is -55 mV. Synaptic messages to the brain trigger depolarization which causes the membrane potential to rise or fall. Action potentials are produced when enough depolarization occurs and the membrane's potential exceeds an upper limit.

Action potential is the outcome from the voltage-gated channels within the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated ion channel is in fact a collection made of proteins. They remain within the plasma membrane. They produce the action potential, which can give rise to the positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is responsible for controlling the level of these channels. The action potential is created whenever the positive feedback proceeds with full intensity. The time and amplitude of the action are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the ion channels with voltage-gated voltage. There are a variety of ion channel types that are available that are believed to generate positive feedback processes that produce these potentials. The sodium channels that are voltage-gated participate in the generation of stronger potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulses. Slower ones like those produced in the muscle cells are mediated by the calcium Ion channels. The most researched voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion networks that play an important role in higher speed nerve impulse transmission.
