The transient negative change known as the refractory phase prevents the return moving of the action-potential. In animal cells , usually two kinds of these potentials can be in existence, one which is produced via voltage-gated channels and the other which is generated by voltage-gated calcium channels.

Most cells have the same voltage between their internal and external environments. The cell's voltage is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is -70 mV. In most cells, no voltage fluctuations are known to happen, but in a few cells, this is a standard feature. Some cells show variations in the voltage, as the voltage rises and falls. The time between these potentials can vary widely. In brain cells the down and up phase of an action potential are complete in less than the thousandth of a second, whereas in other cell types, the intervals may be prolonged to several seconds. The electrical characteristic of an animal cell is influenced by the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of two layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized since they have the same voltage, also known as membrane potential. For neuronal cells, axons and the body of the cell have distinct electrical characteristics. Most excitable portion of a neuron is the axon hillock. However, the axon and body too are excited. The axon hillock's maximum resting power is -70 mV and the threshold voltage is -55 mV. Synaptic inputs to the neuron result in depolarization that causes the membrane potential to increase or fall. Action potentials are produced when enough depolarization happens and the membrane's potential exceeds a threshold value.

Action potential is the result in the function of voltage-gated channels present in the plasma membrane of cells. A voltage-gated ion channel is in fact a collection of proteins which remain in the plasma and produce action potential as it may trigger the positive feedback loop. Membrane power is responsible for controlling the state of these channels. Action potential is generated when the feedback cycle gets full power. Its duration and amplitude are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion channel voltage-gated. Ion channels of various types exist that can generate positive feedback and create these potentials. They are involved in generation of faster potentials like those of nerve impulses. Lesser ones, such as those created by muscle cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The the most intensely studied voltage-gated Ion channels are sodium channels, which play a role in higher speed nerve impulse transmission.
