Action potential refers to an event that occurs when the membrane potential of a cell initially increases and then decreases. It is a characteristic feature of a number of animal cells , namely neurons, muscle cells and cell types that are endocrine. Plant cells also produce them. Neurons play a significant part in cell-to cell communication. In the beta cells of the pancreas, actions potential is associated with hormone release. Plasma membrane is a type of voltage-gated ion channels for producing action potential. These channels remain closed whenever the membrane's potential remains close to it's resting value of the cell . However, when the membrane's potential is increased it becomes active. When the channels are inactive, they allow for an inward flow sodium ions. This in turn increases cell membrane power. The fast inward flow of sodium ions changes the polarity of the membrane and , in the process, cease to function. After this, potassium channels get activated , and inward flows potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane is returned back to its original position. The transient negative change known as refractory periods prevents back travel of the action potential. In animal cells typically two kinds of these voltages are in existence, one of which is by voltage-gated sodium channels and another one that can be produced by voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells show in a voltage differential between their surroundings and their interior. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is about -70 mV. The majority of cells show few voltage fluctuations are believed for their existence, but in some cells this is a typical characteristic. Certain cells may also exhibit the cycle of up and down as the voltage increases and declines. The duration of these voltages can vary widely. In brain cells, the up and down process of action possible are performed in less than a thousandth of a second. However, in other cells, the sequences can take as long as a couple of seconds. The electrical characteristic of an animal cell is dependent on its membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of an lipid layer and proteins. The lipid layer serves as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized since they have a voltage variation known as membrane potential. For the neurons, dendrites and the body of the cell have distinct electrical characteristics. The most active part of a neuron is the axon hillock however axons and the cell body too are excited. At the axon , the maximum resting power is -70 mV and the threshold voltage is -55 mgV. Synaptic messages to the brain result in depolarization that causes the membrane potential to rise or fall. Action potential is created when enough depolarization occurs and the membrane potential reaches an upper limit.

Action potential is the result of the work of voltage-gated Ion channels that reside in the plasma membrane of cells. A voltage-gated Ion Channel is actually a cluster of proteins that remain embedded in the plasma membrane. It produces action potential because it can be the cause of the positive feedback loop. Membrane potential plays a role in monitoring the status of ion channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback circuit proceeds with full intensity. The duration and the amplitude are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated ionchannels. A variety of Ion Channels exist that can generate positive feedback cycles that eventually produce these potentials. They are involved in the creation of more powerful impulses like nerve impulse. In contrast, the slower ones produced in the muscles cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The most thoroughly studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion channels that are involved in the speedier nerve impulse conduction.
