The action potential is a process where the membrane potential of a cell initially increases before decreasing. It is a characteristic property to a variety of cell types in animals, such as muscles, neurons and hormone-producing cells. Plant cells can also produce these. Neurons play an important role in cell-tocell communications. In pancreas beta cells, action potentials are linked with that release of insulin. Plasma membrane is a type of voltage-gated channels for producing action potential. They remain closed whenever the membrane's potential remains near what is the limit of the cell . However, when the membrane's potential increases and the channels begin to open, they become active. Once the channels are open, they allow for an inward flow sodium ions which increases the potential of membranes. The rapid flow of sodium ions leads to a change in the membrane's polarity and consequently they turn off. In the following, potassium channels become activated , and there is an outward flow of potassium ions due to which the membrane is returned to its neutral state. A temporary negative shift, known as refractory duration prevents the reverse running of the action kinetic. In the animal cell, generally two kinds of these are recognized, for instance, one of which is created due to voltage-gated sodium channels, the other results from calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Nearly all cells maintain some degree of voltage variation between the outside and inside. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is about -70 mV. The majority of cells show tiny voltage fluctuations are observed to take place, but in certain cells, this is a common feature. Cells can show upward and downward cycles as the voltage rises and falls. The duration of these voltages vary throughout a vast range. In brain cells the down and up cycle of the action potential is accomplished in less than one thousandth of a second, whereas in other cell types, the cycles could take several seconds. The electrical properties of an animal cell is influenced by the membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of a layer of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized because they keep the same voltage, also known as membrane potential. For neurons, , dendrites and cell body have different electrical characteristics. The most exuberant part of an individual neuron is the hillock, however, axons as well as cells body too are excited. At the axon hillock the resting potential is -70 mV and the threshold voltage is -55 mgV. Synaptic inputs to the neuron result in depolarization which causes membrane potential to increase or decrease. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization is accumulated and the membrane voltage reaches an upper limit.

Action potential is the outcome by the action of voltage-gated channels present in the plasma membranes of cells. An ion channel that is voltage-gated is actually a cluster of proteins , which are encased in the plasma membrane. This produces an action potential since it could produce positive feedback loop. Membrane potential plays a role in maintaining the state of the ion channels. The action potential is created when the feedback cycle is carried out at full force. The duration and intensity are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated ion channels. Many kinds of ionchannels have been identified which generate positive feedback cycles that eventually lead to the generation of these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in the creation of more powerful potentials that mimic those of nerve impulse. They are slower than those that occur in the muscles cells are controlled by calcium ion channels. The most researched voltage-gated channel are sodium-ion channels that contribute to faster nerve impulse conduction.
