The action potential is a process where the potential for the membrane that a cell has first increases then decreases. It is a common characteristic of many animal cells , namely muscle cells, neurons, and Endocrine cells. Plant cells can also produce these. Neurons play the most important role in cell-to-cell communication. in pancreas beta cell action potential is associated with that release of insulin. Plasma membranes comprise a particular kind in voltage-gated, ion-channels that are used for creating action potential. These channels are shut whenever the membrane's potential remains within it's resting value of the cell . However If the membrane's current potential rises it opens the channels. When they are opened, they allow an inward flow of sodium ions. This increases the membrane potential. The rapid inward flow of sodium ions changes the polarity of the membrane and consequently they stop functioning. After this, potassium channels get activated , and then there's an outward flowing of the potassium ions . This causes the membrane returns to its resting state. The transient shift in negative known as refractory interval prevents further forward motion of an action potential. In animal cells generally two kinds of these potentials can be recognized, for instance, one that is generated because of voltage-gated sodium channels and another one that occurs due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

Most cells have the voltage of their exterior and interior environments. The voltage of a cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70 mV. In majority of cells very minimal voltage fluctuations have been observed to occur however in some cells, this is a standard feature. Some cells also show oscillations between up and down when they increase and decrease in voltage. The duration of these voltages fluctuate over a large range. In brain cells, the up and down action potential cycle is complete in less than the thousandth of a second. In different types of cells, the cycle may last for several seconds. The electrical characteristic of a cell in the animal kingdom depends on the membrane structure. Cell membrane is comprised of an lipid layer and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized , as they sustain the difference in voltage known as membrane potential. In case of dendrites, neurons, axons and the cell body all have different electrical characteristics. The most excitable component of an individual neuron is the hillock. However, the axon, dendrites, and cell body are also excited. The axon hillock's resting potential is -70mV and the threshold is -55 millivolts. Synaptic stimulation to the neuron cause depolarization, which causes the membrane potential to increase or decrease. An action potential is created once sufficient depolarization takes place and the membrane's potential exceeds a threshold value.

The action potential results on the activities of voltage-gated channels which are located within the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated ion canal is actually a cluster of proteins that are embedded inside the plasma membrane. These proteins produce the action potential, which can cause positive feedback loop. Membrane voltage is responsible for controlling the state of ion channels. Action potential is generated when the positive feedback cycle continues at its fullest. The duration as well as the magnitude are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated ion channels. Many kinds of ionchannels are available that are believed to generate positive feedback and produce these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels are involved in the generation of larger potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulses. More slow ones such as those produced in the muscle cells are controlled by calcium ion channels. The most extensively studied voltage-gated Ion channels are sodium ion channels participating in quicker nerve impulse conduction.
