Action potential is a phenomenon that occurs when the membrane potential of a cell initially increases before decreasing. It is the characteristic property to a variety of human cells, which include neurons, muscle cells and cell types that are endocrine. Some plant cells also make these. Neurons play an essential part in cell-to cell communication. Pancreas beta cells have beta cells. the action potential is associated with production of insulin. Plasma membrane is a type of voltage-gated ion channels that are responsible for producing action potential. These channels remain closed as long as the potential of the membrane is close to it's resting value of the cell , but if the membrane potential increases the channels then they open. Once the channels are open, they let inward flow sodium ions. This can increase cell membrane power. The swift inward flow of sodium ions results in changing the polarity of the membrane and consequently they disappear. Following this, potassium channels become activated , and inward flows of the potassium ions . The result is that the membrane returns back to its original position. The transient negative change known as the refractory phase prevents the return travel of the action potential. In animal cells , usually two kinds of these potentials can be known for example, one by the voltage-gated calcium channels, the other is generated by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

A majority of cells experience some degree of voltage variation between their external and internal environments. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70 mV. Most cells have minor voltage fluctuations are observed to happen, but in a few cells, this is a common characteristic. Certain cells also exhibit oscillations between up and down when the voltage changes. The duration of these potentials vary throughout a vast range. In brain cells the down and up cycle of action potential are complete in less than the thousandth of a second. However, in other types of cells , cycles could take several seconds. The electrical property of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent on the membrane structure. Cell membrane is made up of a layer of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized as they maintain an electric charge that is known as membrane potential. In case of cells, neurons and axons, dendrites and the cell body all have different electrical properties. The most stimulated part of neuron is the axon hillock, but the axon and the cell body also become excited. In the axon hillock, the resting potential is -70mV and the threshold is -55 mV. Synaptic inputs to the neuron induce depolarization and cause the membrane potential to increase or fall. The action potential is generated when enough depolarization develops until that membrane potential reaches the threshold.

Action potential is the outcome that voltage-gated ion channels found within the plasma membranes of cells. A voltage-gated , ion channel is actually a group of proteins which remain in plasma membrane and produces action potential as it may generate a positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is responsible for controlling the state of Ion channels. The action potential is created in the event that the positive feedback process gets full power. The time and amplitude of the action are determined by the biophysical properties of the ion channels that are voltage-gated. Many types of ion channels are known that produce positive feedback loops and eventually create these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in the generation of larger impulses like nerve impulse. Lesser ones, such as those created in muscle cells are controlled by calcium ion channels.The ones that have been the most extensively studied voltage -gated ion channels are the sodium ion channel that participate in faster nerve impulse communication.
