A process called an action potential happens that causes the membrane potential for a specific cell initially increases then decreases. It is the characteristic property that is present in a wide variety of animal cells , including neurons, muscle cells and the endocrine cell. Plant cells can also produce these. Neurons play a vital function in cell-to-cell communication. In the beta cells of the pancreas, action potentials are associated with that release of insulin. Plasma membranes contain a distinct type in voltage-gated, ion-channels that are used for producing action potential. These channels remain closed whenever the membrane's potential remains within it's resting value of the cell . However, should the membrane potential increase the channels then they open. When the channels are inactive, they permit an inward flow of sodium ions. This increases your membrane's potential. The rapid inward flow of sodium ions results in changing the membrane's polarity and , consequently, they are inactive. After that potassium channels become activated , and they are able to flow outward of the potassium ions . As a result, the membrane is returned to its resting condition. The transient shift in negative known as refractory period blocks back forward motion of an action potential. In animal cells generally two types of these potentials exist, well-known, such as one which is triggered due to the voltage-gated sodium channels, and one that can be produced by voltage-gated calcium channels.

In most cells, there is a voltage difference between their interior and exterior environment. The cell's voltage is measured in millivolts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is -70 mV. In most cells, no voltage fluctuations are known as occurring, however in certain cells this may be a common characteristic. Some cells also display oscillations between up and down when the voltage changes. The duration of these voltages vary across a range of. In brain cells the up and down cycle of the action potential is completed in less than a thousandth of a second. In other types of cells , cycles may take several seconds. The electrical capacity of an animal cell is dependent on its membrane structure. The cell membrane is composed of one layer of lipids along with proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized as they maintain a voltage variation called membrane potential. For neurons, axons, dendrites and cells have distinct electrical characteristics. The most active part of a neuron is the axon hillock, however, axons as well as cells body too can be stimulated. At the axon hillock the maximum resting power is -70 mV and the threshold potential is 55 millivolts. Synaptic inputs into the neuron result in depolarization which causes membrane potential to rise or fall. A potential for action is created when enough depolarization develops until that membrane potential reaches a threshold value.

The action potential results that voltage-gated ion channels within the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated ion channel is actually a cluster of proteins that remains embedded inside the plasma membrane. These proteins produce movement potential because it is able to cause the positive feedback loop. Membrane potential is accountable for controlling the state of these channels. The action potential is created by the positive feedback cycle that proceeds with full intensity. The duration and the amplitude are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the ion-channels that are voltage-gated. Many types of ion channels are known to produce positive feedback mechanisms and result in the production of these potentials. The sodium channels that are voltage-gated participate in the generation of stronger potentials similar to nerve impulses. More slow ones such as those produced in muscle cells are controlled by the calcium Ion channels. The most intensively studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium-ion channels that contribute to quicker nerve impulse conduction.
