The transient shift in negative known as refractory duration prevents the reverse travelling of the action potential. In animal cells typically two types of these potentials are recognized, for instance, one is generated due to voltage-gated sodium channels, the other is caused by calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

In most cells, there is a voltage difference between their external and internal environments. The voltage of the cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70 mV. In majority of cells very tiny voltage fluctuations are observed to occur , however in certain cells this is a regular characteristic. Certain cells can also exhibit periodic up and down oscillations as they increase and decrease in voltage. The duration of these voltages can vary widely. In brain cells, the up and down process of action possible are completed in less than a thousandth of a second, whereas in other cell types, the intervals may be prolonged to several seconds. The electrical function of an animal cell depends on the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of a layer of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

All animal cells are electrically polarized as they maintain the voltage differential called membrane potential. For neurons, axonsand dendrites and the body of the cell have distinct electrical properties. Most excitable portion of an individual neuron is the hillock but axon and cell body also get excited. At the axon , the resting voltage is -70 mV and the threshold voltage is at -55 millivolts. Synaptic messages to the brain cause depolarization, which causes the membrane potential to rise or decrease. An action potential is created once enough depolarization develops until the membrane voltage reaches a threshold value.

Action potential is the outcome on the activities of voltage-gated channels that are found in the plasma membranes of cells. A voltage-gated ion canal is actually a group consisting of proteins that stay in the plasma membrane. It produces an action potential since it could cause positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for control of the activity of Ion channels. The action potential is created when the feedback cycle proceeds with full intensity. Its duration and amplitude are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the ion-channels that are voltage-gated. Many types of ion channels are known to produce positive feedback loops and eventually create these potentials. These sodium channels are involved in generation of faster potentials , similar to those that result from nerve impulse. More slow ones such as those produced by muscle cells are controlled by calcium ion channels.The most rigorously researched voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium ion networks that play an important role in faster nerve impulse communication.
