Action potential is an event in which the membrane voltage of a living cell first increases and then decreases. It is a typical characteristic of a number of animal cells namely, muscle cells, neurons, and cell types that are endocrine. Some plant cells also produce these. Neurons play an important function in cell-to-cell communication. In the beta pancreas cells the action potential is associated with in the production of insulin. Plasma membrane is a type of voltage-gated ion channels for creating action potential. These channels remain closed while the membrane's current potential close to those of the cell . However, when the membrane's potential increases it becomes active. Once the channels are open, they allow for an inward flow sodium ions, which increase your membrane's potential. The rapid flow of sodium ions causes a change in the membrane's polarity and as a result they stop functioning. Following this, potassium channels become active and inward flows of potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane is returned to its resting condition. A transient , negative shift known as refractory time prevents the back traveling of the action voltage. In the animal cell, generally two varieties of these possibles are known for example, one which is triggered due to voltage-gated sodium channels, and another that results from calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Most cells have the voltage of their environment and their inside. The cell's voltage is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is about -70 mV. Most cells have few voltage fluctuations are believed to happen, but in a few cells this is a typical feature. Some cells also show periodic up and down oscillations as the voltage decreases and increases. The duration of these potentials vary throughout a vast range. In brain cells the up and down process of action possible are completed in a fraction of a millisecond of a second. However, in other cells, these sequences can take as long as a couple of seconds. The electrical property of a cell in the animal kingdom is influenced by the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of a layer of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulation.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized since they have a voltage difference known as membrane potential. For the neurons, dendrites as well as the cell body have various electrical properties. Most excitable portion of neurons is the axon hillock. However, the axon, dendrites, and cell body can also be excited. At the axon , the maximum resting power is -70 mV and the threshold potential is at -55 mV. Synaptic inputs to the neuron result in depolarization which causes membrane potential to rise or fall. It is produced when enough depolarization is accumulated and the membrane voltage reaches an upper limit.

Action potential is the outcome of the activity of voltage-gated ion channels in the plasma membrane of a cell. A voltage-gated ion canal is in fact a collection of proteins that remain embedded in the plasma membrane. It produces motion potential because it can trigger the positive feedback loop. Membrane current is responsible monitoring the status of ion channels. The action potential is created as the feedback loop goes on at full-speed. Its duration and amplitude are determined by the bio-physical properties associated with the voltage-gated ion channel. Ion channels of various types have been identified which generate positive feedback cycles , which eventually lead to the generation of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels are involved in the creation of fast possibles that resemble those produced by nerve impulse. In contrast, the slower ones produced in muscles are controlled by calcium Ion channels. The most rigorously researched voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium channels, which play a role in faster nerve impulse communication.
