It is an event that occurs when the membrane potential in a cell is first increased but then decreases. It is a characteristic feature of several animal cells namely, muscle cells, neurons, and endocrinological cells. Plant cells can also produce them. Neurons play an important role in cell-tocell communications. in pancreas beta cell the action potential is associated with releases of insulin. Plasma membranes are made up of a special kind of ion channels that are voltage-gated for creating action potential. These channels are shut once the membrane's voltage is close to the potential at rest of the cell . However, when the membrane's voltage increases it becomes active. The channels that are active allow for an inward flow sodium ions. This can increase its membrane potential. The rapid flow inward of sodium ions affects the polarity of the membrane and , as a consequence, they cease to function. The potassium channels, after which, become activated and then there's an outward flowing potassium ions . Upon this, the membrane is returned to its resting state. The transient shift in negative known as refractory duration prevents the reverse motion of the potential. In animal cells generally two kinds of these voltages are well-known, such as one that is caused by voltage-gated sodium channels, the other is produced due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

Nearly all cells show some degree of voltage variation between their surroundings and their interior. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage of an animal cell is -70 mV. In the majority of cells little voltage fluctuations are known to occur however in some cells, this is a standard characteristic. Some cells exhibit upward and downward cycles as the voltage decreases and increases. The duration of these potentials can vary widely. In brain cells the down and up cycle of the action potential is performed in less than a thousandth of a second, whereas in other cells, sequences can take as long as a couple of seconds. The electrical property of a cell in the animal kingdom is dependent on its membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of two layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized since they have the difference in voltage called membrane potential. For neurons, , dendrites and cells have distinct electrical characteristics. The most excitable component of an neuron is its axon hillock, but the axon and the cell body too are excited. In the axon hillock, the resting potential is -70mV and the threshold voltage is at -55 millivolts. Synaptic stimulation to the neuron induce depolarization and cause the membrane potential to increase or decrease. Action potential is created when enough depolarization occurs and the membrane potential crosses a threshold value.

Action potential is the result of the work of voltage-gated Ion channels within the plasma membrane of cells. The voltage-gated ion channel actually a cluster made of proteins. They remain in the plasma membrane. This produces motion potential because it can be the cause of the positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for monitoring the status of Ion channels. The action potential is created whenever the positive feedback is carried out at full force. The time and the intensity are determined by the bio-physical properties of the ion channel voltage-gated. A variety of Ion Channels exist that can generate positive feedback cycles that eventually produce these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium-channels are involved in the generation of stronger possibles that resemble those produced by nerve impulses. More slow ones such as those produced in muscles cells are controlled by the calcium ion channels. The most thoroughly studied voltage-gated channel are sodium ion channels involved in the faster conduction of nerve impulses.
