In the process, the membrane returns to its normal state. The transient shift in negative known as the refractory phase prevents the return forward motion of an action potential. In animal cells generally two kinds of these potentials can be acknowledged, one which is produced through voltage-gated sodium channels, and one that results from calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

A voltage-gated Ion Channel is in fact a collection of proteins that remains embedded in the plasma membrane. It generates the action potential, which can generate a positive feedback loop. Membrane Potential is responsible for setting the parameters of Ion channels. Action potential is generated during the time that the feedback cycle takes place at full intensity. The duration and intensity are determined by the bio-physical properties of the voltage-gated ionchannels. Many types of ion channels are known to produce positive feedback mechanisms and produce these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels are involved in the creation of fast possibles that resemble those produced by nerve impulse. In contrast, the slower ones produced in the muscles cells are controlled by calcium Ion channels.The most intensively studied voltage-gated Ion channels are sodium ion channels involved in greater speed of nerve impulse conduction.
