An action potential occurs in which the membrane voltage of a living cell first increases but then decreases. It is the characteristic property that is present in a wide variety of animal cells including neurons, muscle cells and the endocrine cells. Certain plant cells also produce these. Neurons play the most important function in cell-to-cell communication. In the beta cells of the pancreas, action potential is associated with releases of insulin. Plasma membranes have a specific type of voltage-gated ion channels that are responsible for creating action potential. These channels are shut even when their membrane potential is near its resting capacity of the cell , but in the event that the membrane potential grows then the channels will become active. When the channels open they allow an inward flow of sodium ions. This in turn increases the cell's membrane potency. The rapid flow of sodium ions leads to a change in the polarity of the membrane and , consequently, they become inactive. The potassium channels then become activated and then there's an outward flowing of sodium ions. Due to this, the membrane is returned back to its original position. The transient negative change known as refractory is a way to stop back movement of the action potential. In animal cells typically two kinds of these are well-known, such as one through voltage-gated sodium channels, the other is produced due to voltage-gated calcium channels.

A majority of cells experience in a voltage differential between their exterior and interior environments. The voltage of a cell is measured in milli volts (mV). The typical voltage for an animal cell is -70mV. In the majority cells, little voltage fluctuations are known for their existence, but in some cells, this is a common characteristic. Cells can show upward and downward cycles as the voltage decreases and increases. The duration of these potentials vary throughout a vast range. In brain cells, the up and down action potential cycle is completed in a fraction of a millisecond of a second, whereas in other cells, these sequences can take as long as a couple of seconds. The electrical function of an animal cell is influenced by the membrane structure. Cell membranes are composed of layers of lipids and proteins. The lipid layer functions as an insulator.

All animal cells are electrically polarized since they have the difference in voltage known as membrane potential. In case of cells, neurons and axons, dendrites and cell bodies have different electrical characteristics. The most excitable part of neurons is the axon hillock however axons and the cell body can also be excited. The axon hillock's resting current is around 70 mV and the threshold voltage is -55 millivolts. Synaptic inputs into the neuron result in depolarization causing the membrane potential to rise or decrease. An action potential is created once enough depolarization has occurred and the membrane potential exceeds an upper limit.

The action potential results in the function of voltage-gated channels found within the plasma membranes of cells. A voltage-gated , ion channel is actually a cluster of proteins which remain inside the plasma membrane. These proteins produce action potential as it may be the cause of an positive feedback loop. Membrane current is responsible controlling the state of Ion channels. The action potential is created during the time that the feedback cycle gets full power. The duration and intensity are controlled by the bio-physical characteristics of the voltage-gated ionchannels. Several types of ion channels are known to produce positive feedback cycles , which eventually result in the production of these potentials. Voltage-gated sodium channels are involved in the generation of larger potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulse. Lesser ones, such as those created by muscles are controlled by the calcium ion channels.The most studied voltage-gated Ion channels are sodium channels, which play a role in greater speed of nerve impulse conduction.
