An action potential occurs during which the membrane power that a cell has first increases but then decreases. It is a typical characteristic of a number of cell types in animals, such as muscle cells, neural cells, and endocrine cells. Some plant cells also produce these. Plasma membranes contain a distinct type of voltage-gated ion channels for creating action potential. The channels are closed even when their membrane potential is within the resting potential of the cell but when the membrane's potential increases then the channels will become active. As the channels become open, they allow an inward flow of sodium ions that increase your membrane's potential. The rapid inward flow sodium ions leads to a change in the membrane's polarity and consequently they are inactive. Following that, potassium channels are activated , and then there's an outward flowing potassium ions . As a result, the membrane returns to its original state. A transient negative shift referred to as refractory periods prevents back movement of the action potential. In the cells of animals, generally two types of these potentials are well-known, such as one which is triggered due to the voltage-gated sodium channels, and another that occurs due to calcium channels that are voltage-gated.

Most cells have some degree of voltage variation between their interior and exterior environment. The voltage of the cell is measured in millivolts (mV). The voltage of a typical animal cell is -70 mV. The majority of cells show tiny voltage fluctuations are observed to take place, but in certain cells this is a usual feature. Certain cells also exhibit upward and downward cycles as the voltage fluctuates. The duration of these voltages can be varied over a broad spectrum. In brain cells the up and down sequence of action potentials are completed in a fraction of a millisecond of a second. However, in other cells, these cycles can take up to a few seconds. The electrical function of an animal cell depends on the membrane structure. Cell membranes consist of an outer layer of lipids as well as proteins. The lipid layer acts as an insulator.

Animal cells are all electrically polarized , as they sustain an electric charge that is known as membrane potential. For neuronal cells, axons and cells have distinct electrical characteristics. The most excitable part of neuron is the Axon hillock but axon and cell body can also be excited. In the axon hillock, the maximum resting power is -70 mV and the threshold voltage is -55 mV. The synaptic inputs to the neurons cause depolarization, causing the membrane potential to increase or fall. Action potential is created when enough depolarization builds up until the membrane potential is at a threshold value.

Action potential is the result in the function of voltage-gated channels that reside in the plasma membranes of cells. The voltage-gated channel is actually a cluster of proteins that remain embedded in the plasma membrane. This produces motion potential because it can generate a positive feedback loop. Membrane current is responsible control of the activity of these channels. The action potential is created by the positive feedback cycle that continues at its fullest. The time and amplitude of the action are dependent on the bio-physical properties of the ion-channels that are voltage-gated. Many types of ion channels have been discovered that cause positive feedback cycles that eventually create these potentials. The sodium channels with voltage are involved in the generation of larger potentials similar to those generated by nerve impulse. Slower ones like those produced in muscles cells are controlled by the calcium Ion channels.The most extensively studied voltage-gated Ion channels are the sodium channels, which play a role in the speedier nerve impulse conduction.
